Austin Empowered (Soap Opera Digest - February 7, 2012) After Three Soaps, Austin Peck Can Role With Whatever Life Throws Him

2012 is wide open for Austin Peck, who donned several different hats in 2011: ONE LIFE TO LIVE's smary-but-funny porn producer Rick, real-life husband to former AS THE WORLD TURNS co-star Terri Conn (ex-Katie; ex-Aubrey, OLTL) and personal trainer at a New Jersey gym.

… But playing Rick didn't afford him the one thing he really wanted to do: work with his ladylove again. Peck and Conn's characters never crossed paths in Llanview. "That was one of the things I was most excited about, and most bummed about, because I really wanted that to happen," sighs Peck. "Working with Terri [at ATWT] was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had. We just have this great chemistry. The great thing about me and Terri is that it's easily translatable outside of being together. Because, usually, when you're together [off-screen] you lose chemistry, but with us, that doesn't really happen because our sensibility is more comedic. Our chemistry is based in the fun and the positive play. We both just love to play."

The duo, who wed in July of 2011, has let their marriage enhance that sense of fun. "Obviously a relationship changes… it changes a great deal, because any relationship over a period of time changes - and marriage will change everything. But, for us, it's just changed for the better," grins Peck. "For us, we get excited about going to Starbucks and getting coffee [laughs]. We talk about, 'Let's go to the market and pick up some food,' and we go, 'Okay!' and look at each other with a big smile. We're just so excited to go down the aisle and shop for food: 'Isn't this amazing?' 'Yes, it is!' We get really excited over life's little things."

Just The Facts
Birthday: April 9
Birthplace: Honolulu, HI
Married To: Terri Conn (ex-Aubrey, OLTL; ex-Katie, ATWT) since July 1, 2011. "I'm the more affectionate between the two of us. She just is the recipient of my constant groping."
Kids, Incorporated: Peck has two sons with ex-wife Tara Crespo, Aiden, 9 and Roman, 6, plus Terri's daughter with ex Artie Colombino, Julia, 7. "They're great. Right now, Aiden and Roman are playing with their action figures. This is right before I'm going to make them clean the entire apartment, starting with vacuuming and then scrubbing the toilets with their toothbrushes [laughs]. You gotta have kids so they can do things around the house."
Here, There, And Everywhere: Peck started off playing Austin on DAYS from 1995-2002 and came back to the role from 2005-06. He then moved to Oakdale to play ATWT's Brad from 2007 to 2009.
Geek Squad: "Just ask Terri and my boys and Julia, and they'll tell you what a supernerd I am. I walk out the door, and I put on Super Cool Guy but, in reality, I'm not. I'm Super Nerdy Guy."
Reality (TV) Bites: "It's people acting… poorly!"

Caption: Brad and Katie's reel life on ATWT ended in tears, but Peck and Conn's real life is full of laughs.

Leaving Llanview: My Final Visit with the Cast of One Life to Live! (Michael Fairman On Air On Soaps - January 10, 2012) As I turned around from that incredible scene, I spotted Terri Conn (Aubrey) who I have loved since her time as Katie on As the World Turns. Then it was our turn to talk along with On-Air On-Soaps “Newcomer of the Year” Josh Kelly (Cutter)! Josh revealed how he felt about his first soap experience, “I love it. I was optimistic coming into it and I was looking at it as a learning experience, but I liked it so much more than I thought I would. I did not think I would end up being with people who were so approachable and helpful, like Terri. Add to the fact, that the execs allowed me and encouraged me to be funnier. Frank and Ron were like, ‘Do more of your goofy stuff and we will work it in!’ I am always happiest when I am being goofy. I got to work with some great people here. I had heard about the character of Alex Olanov, so I loved that she turned out to be Cutter’s mom. I had met Tonja Walker (Alex) my first or second week here. I did a scene with Robin Strasser (Dorian), where Robin gets mad about David changing his MyFace status to: In a relationship with Alex Olanov. So that was funny. I loved working with both of them. When I first started working on the show, Tom Degnan (Joey) and I started right away being best friends. So our scenes were fun to play, because there was so much duplicity going on, and there were so many levels to play. I loved the one scene where Aubrey decided she was going to marry Joey. So I kiss Terri, and then I go kiss Tom to cover it up. I did not tell Tom I was going to do that!”

Terri piped in how much she also loved Cutter and Aubrey’s duplicity! “I was just thinking about when you would come out in a towel, and it was the first time Cutter came into the room. I was trying to talk my way out of it, and all of a sudden you end up standing there and I go, ‘What are you doing?’ And you go, ‘I’m your brother!’ And I am like, ‘Whaaaat?’ That was fun. And then running back and forth and putting clothes on and taking clothes off, that was fun. I miss working with Josh. We started out as this group of four relatively new characters. Gina Tognoni had been on before. That is really tough to do with the daytime audience, because they don’t want to watch new people all together. So that was sort of a strike against us starting out. I think with the way the writing was, and the way we all played the story together, we made the most of it. But I think ultimately they had to put us with other people so people would actually invest in it. I think it’s interesting to come back to our relationship now that we are more a part of the canvas. So who knows what will happen at the end?” And what about those rumors that it would be revealed that Aubrey might be somehow connected to Karen Wolek/Katrina Karr/Jenny Wolek, since her birth-name is Christine Karr? “I don’t know for sure,” revealed Terri, “But there was an idea of having Aubrey be a part of the history of the show, but it didn’t happen, obviously.” Looks like sadly, now we will never know!

New Year, New You (Soap Opera Digest - January 10, 2012) Tips and advice from actors on how to start your own self-improvement program for 2012

Add In/Crowd Out: "Instead of feeling so overwhelmed by completely turning your diet around, like, 'I've gotta eat tofu and kale and not have chocolate,' don't deprive yourself," suggests Terri Conn (Aubrey). "The first step is adding in more fruits and vegetables. Don't think about anything else and eat your normal diet, but add in a couple more servings. Then you crowd out the bad stuff. You won't want it. If it's hard for you to get fresh stuff, get frozen because they freeze it right after they pick it. It's one great piece of advice that's not so hard to do and gets you on the right road."

Take Two (Soap Opera Digest - January 10, 2012) Terri Conn (Aubrey, ONE LIFE TO LIVE; ex-Katie, ATWT) wishes she could've shared some screen time on OLTL with her hubby Austin Peck (ex-Brad, ATWT), who plays Llanview's resident porn/music producer, Rick, before the show's finale. "We never did!" she laughs. "I thought it might happen, just as a kind of wink, wink to the AS THE WORLD TURNS fans, even just one little scene! Ron [Carlivati, head writer] is so smart and savvy, I have full confidence that he would've made it really funny. I love working with Austin," she continues. "Sometimes we'll go on YouTube and watch old stuff that we've completely forgotten about [on ATWT] and I'm like, 'Oh, my God! Remember when we did that?' You have certain episodes or parts of a story that are always fresh in your mind because it was a big deal, like when Brad died, but the little things you forget about. Still Smiling (Soap Opera Digest - January 3, 2012) It Was A Whirlwind Year Of Change For Terri Conn, But She's Happier Than Ever

It's been two weeks since ONE LIFE TO LIVE wrapped production with the added sting of Prospect Park's decision to pull the plug on its plans for the show online. So, when Digest receives a call from Terri Conn, she admits to having a bit of déjà vu. "I feel like I'm sort of in the same place I was last year," Conn sighs. "It's really weird. It's only been over a year, but so much has happened. It has not been boring!"

Indeed. It didn't take long for Conn to find a new daytime home after AS THE WORLD TURNS, where she toiled for over a decade, went off the air in September 2010. But four months after she joined OLTL as mischievous newcomer Aubrey, the show got the ax from ABC. "I kind of knew that [OLTL] has its days numbered as well," the actress shares. "I never had plans to go to L.A., so I was happy to get on the last soap in New York because it really is, well… used to be, the most secure job in acting. But it was an amazing experience and I'm glad I did it. I got to meet a whole different group of people and I got to do this totally different character, so it was definitely worth it. I'm really appreciative of that. It's just kind of disconcerting to be like. 'Well, it's a year later and I'm unemployed again.'"

Nonetheless, Conn has enjoyed her time in Llanview, especially working alongside Josh Kelly (Cutter). "We had a great time!" she chuckles. "He lets himself be goofy and funny. That's such a unique relationship [between Cutter and Aubrey]. Did they really love each other? Were they just addicted to the excitement and adventure? It's almost a love/hate thing." Conn also felt right at home with the OLTL crew, which included a few familiar faces. "A lot of the crew from AS THE WORLD TURNS ended up there," she explains. "One day, I looked out and it was one of our stage managers, two of our camera guys, one of our directors and a makeup artist. I was like, 'If I just put on my blinders and look straight, I feel like I'm at AS THE WORLD TURNS again! Look at all of you guys standing there!' I think I was doing a scene with Tom Degnan [ex-Joey; ex-Adam, ATWT], too! It is kind of a small, little world."

Which made saying good-bye to the show and hearing the devastating PP news that much harder. "It's sick," she laments. "I'm really just sad about all of it. I don't even get it. I was more empathetic than anything. I'm not as close to them as I was to the AS THE WORLD TURNS crew, but I knew what they were going through. It was weird because I also felt like, 'Oh, I'm getting here at the end of the party.'"

For Conn, the positives of the past year outweigh the negatives. One of the plusses, of course, was marrying her former ATWT co-star Austin Peck (ex-Brad) in July. "I'm not really in the same place," she acknowledges. So how is married life? "We're great," she smiles. "We're finally settling in and just loving married life. I don't like how sitcoms often make fun of how marriage gets boring and you hate your spouse and ha-ha, isn't that funny? Those things kind of seep into your brain. It's work and you have to make sure that it doesn't become like that because you can take anything for granted if you don't watch it, but we treat our relationship like something very precious because it is. And if we can keep going that way, I think we will be good! We love each other very much."

With the craziness of 2011, both good and bad, behind her, what will the new year bring for Conn? "I'm very open," she says. "There are now at least 22 shows [filming] in New York. I have plenty to audition for here." The actress has already booked a prime-time appearance on 30 ROCK and she'd like to take a shot at theater, too. "Austin did a play last year [The Irish Curse]," she explains. "I saw it six times! It was an education for me. I kind of lived vicariously through him; I really want to tackle that challenge and it would be a huge challenge because the thought of stage fright terrifies me! I have the actor's nightmare all the time where I'm doing a play and someone says, 'We need someone to fill in tonight and you have to do it,' and I'm like, 'Yeah, no problem! I can learn my lines fast; I worked on a soap opera!' And then no one has the script and I'm finally at the theater and I'm like, 'I don't have the script!' I'm so scared and there's all of these amazing actors in the company… So I definitely want to tackle that fear. Everybody has their clubs and it's one of those clubs I'm not a part of."

Until then, Conn's content to focus on her family and reflect on what a crazy year it's been. "I don't really feel like all of this happened in one year, but I'm on the other side of it now and I am just a better person, I think. I hope!" she smiles. "I've made my mistakes, but we all do. You just hopefully learn from it and keep goin'!"

Caption: Double Trouble - "She had an arc and I'm happy about that," Conn says of her Llanview alter. And even though she doesn't get a happy ending, "I think that's good! It's karma. With everything you've done, did you really think you'd get your happy ending?"

Funny Girl - "It was definitely a good start to my pilot season!" enthuses Conn about her upcoming appearance on 30 ROCK, which will likely air next month. "It was so fun. I just looked around and said aloud, 'I wanna do this every day!' That is my ambition, to do a comedy. [ATWT] is really where I found the love of it and also the show I did before, BREAKER HIGH. It's just in my blood. I love to laugh and to make other people laugh, so to be able to do that every day, it just fits my personality. I think it'd be hard for me to do one of those LAW & ORDER: SVU shows. I don't want to know that those things exist in the world! I guess it's kind of like putting my head in the sand."

Meeting Tina Fey was also a huge highlight. "She's just so cool and so smart," Conn gushes. "She's one of the best and just makes it look so easy. It was a joy to be there. That's what I want to do, so it totally whetted my appetite and gave me more of a resolve to make that happen. It couldn't have been better."

Just The Facts
Birthday: January 28
Also Known As: ATWT's Katie (1998-2010). "Katie will probably be my all-time favorite character forever - just because I got to do so many amazing things."
Newlywed Game: Conn wed Austin Peck (Rick, OLTL; ex-Brad, ATWT) on July 1, 2011.
Mom's The Word: She shares daughter Julia, 7, with ex-husband Artie Colombino. "She took dance last year and is taking Tae Kwon Do this year. My little, well-rounded girl!" Conn smiles. Peck has two sons from his previous marriage: Aidan, 9, and Roman, 6.
Cutie Pies: "My dad is a phenomenal cook, so Julia loves baking pies with her grandpa. I just really want to start our own traditions and that's one of them."
Health Matters: Conn recently became a health and wellness coach. "I could start seeing clients now, but I don't feel like I'm as prepared as I could be and when people put your health in their hands, you have to be confident. It may be something that I go back to in the future. It's definitely another passion of mine."

TV Time (Soap Opera Weekly - January 3, 2012) Terri Conn (Aubrey, OLTL) learned the hard way when trying to share one of her favorite shows with her daughter Julia, 7. "I love ONCE UPON A TIME," she shares. "I was excited to show Julia, because she's totally into princesses. That's her thing and she hasn't grown out of it yet. I was like, 'Well, I don't know if it will be too scary, but I will try it', so I showed her the pilot and she burst into tears! I was like, 'Uh, never mind!' And turned it off immediately," she chuckles. "As she gets older, I want to be able to, instead of watching SPONGEBOB and iCARLY, which are actually good shows, I would like to enjoy things with her, but I pushed it too soon. Maybe next year! I bought her the box set of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. We watched the pilot together. It's kind of long and drawn-out, even for me. She was like, 'Boring!' At her age, I had my fake bonnet on and running around in the backyard, pretending I was on that show!"

On The Town (CBS Soaps In Depth - January 2, 2012) Okay, so ATWT's Terri Conn (Katie) and hubby Austin Peck (Brad; ex-Austin, DAYS OF OUR LIVES) aren't in a play, but they and Peck's mom, Clare, seemed just as proud to show off Austin's cereal recipe from the Days Celebrity Cookbook at the Home & Leisure Show in Waldorf, MD!
