Holiday Flashback - Monkey Business (Soaps in Depth - December 30, 2003) When Terri Colombino was asked to contribute photos of holidays past, she had to have her mom supply one of their family's old Christmas cards. "Because I don't have any here," she admits. Since she was only three at the time, the actress says she's not sure if she was posing in a flower or a toy shop. "But I actually do remember taking it," she insists. "I'm holding this monkey, and I was fascinated by it." The excursion actually was an annual tradition for mother and daughter. "My mom used to take me to just really beautifully decorated places for Christmas, take my picture there, and make cards out of it. She's very creative." And it's a custom Colombino hopes to continue when she and husband Arthur start a family of their own. "I can't wait to do it with my kids," she smiles. "We do it with the dog now. Last year, Artie and I did a picture of us and Jack together by the fireplace!"
It's the Time of the Season... (SoapCity Online) Are you a fan of the hazy, lazy days of summer? Or is spring your thing? We spoke to cast members from As the World Turns and Guiding Light to find out what their favorite season is.
Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT): Usually it's winter, because I love Christmas. But I'm getting more into fall, living on the East Coast. It's such a season. I never really had it as much, growing up in New Mexico. The trees, the crisp chill in the air, the pumpkins... it's kind of the prelude to my favorite season.
Soap Stars Shop 'Till They Drop (SoapCity Online) "Black Friday," they call it. They're referring, of course, to the day after Thanksgiving, when the official holiday shopping season begins, and stores pull out all the stops. But not everybody adheres to this rigid schedule -- we caught up with your favorite soap stars to find out who gets a jump on their holiday shopping, and who waits until the last minute.
Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT): Well, I used to do it really early because I got so excited about Christmas so early that I just couldn't wait to do Christmas activities. But now I don't have as much time. Probably like everyone else, a couple of weeks before. At least not the day before!
Style File "If you had to do all of your holiday shopping in one store, what would it be?" (Soap Opera Weekly) Terri Colombino: "Maybe [I'd go to] Bloomingdale's because you can find something for everyone. Or Century 21 would be a good one, although around the holidays I can't even imagine what that place is like (laughs)."
It's been a rough patch for Mike Kasnoff (Mark Collier) and Katie Peretti Frasier (Terri Colombino) as of late. A drugged-up Katie got behind the wheel of Margo's car, and ran down Mike! Now, Mike's laid up with multiple injuries, and unbeknownst to him, the woman he loves is responsible. We spoke to Mark Collier and Terri Colombino to get their thoughts on the latest "road block" for Mike and Katie. It's been a rough patch for Mike and Katie as of late. The trip to Australia to help Katie find Simon didn't turn out quite the way they planned - Simon was killed in an explosion, and Katie couldn't forgive Mike for preventing her from seeing Simon one last time. Upon their return, things got worse. Katie learned she had "scrub typhus," resulting from a mite bite in Australia, and when Mike confessed he loved Katie, it only furthered Katie's belief that it was Mike's fault Simon died. But all of that was just a prelude to the latest hurdle for these two. After their confrontation, where she told Mike she wished he'd died instead of Simon, a drugged-up Katie got behind the wheel of Margo's car, and ran down Mike! Now, Mike's laid up with multiple injuries, and unbeknownst to him, the woman he loves is responsible. We spoke to Mark Collier and Terri Colombino to get their thoughts on the latest "road block" for Mike and Katie.
So, what are your thoughts on the whole hit and run plot?
Mark Collier : It sucks.
Terri Colombino : I think it was a blast!
Collier : Yeah, it was actually really fun. (Laughs) It came out of nowhere. I was kind of wondering what they were going to do with us, and it was a really good turn, because... it just turned the tables very quickly because how mad she was at Mike for everything. Now she's put him in this position.
Colombino : It's kind of rough for Katie, obviously! She just told the guy that she hates him and wishes that he died, and then almost kills him.
Collier : But that's OK for Mike, because he's only got a broken arm and a broken leg, so he's fine!
Colombino : Emotions are harder to deal with than broken bones.
Collier : Ohhh, please! (Laughs)
Colombino : No, of course it's harder for him, but it's hard for both of them, and good for both of them, because I think it's going to bring them closer, you know, tragedy always brings people closer. And he's a very forgiving guy, and I think he knows, ultimately she didn't mean what she said, or what she did. She was just hopped up on prescription drugs.
What about the scenes where Katie's trying to confess everything to Mike, and he keeps interrupting with his own apologizing?
Colombino : That's what I like about these two characters together. They both realize when they've crossed the line, and they both want to be the first ones to say "I'm sorry. That wasn't cool. Let's start over." So it kind of leaves the doorway open for them to be able to get close again without having to deal with what happened.
Collier : I just think that Mike starts to see that she didn't mean what she said. Seeing how concerned she is and how much she's there for Mike, makes him realize she may not be in love with him, but at least she doesn't hate him, doesn't want him to die. He does mean something to her...
Colombino : A lot!
Why did Katie confess everything to Henry, instead of going to, say, Carly?
Colombino: Henry, you can confess anything to him, I mean, he's like the most nonjudgmental person in the world, especially because he does so many awful things. And he's helped her through every difficult and horrible thing she's done, so I think that it's just natural for her. She doesn't even think twice about it. She needed to tell someone, and Carly wasn't the right person, because although they became close in Montana, still they're not best friends and she probably wouldn't have understood. Of course, she should probably have known that Henry would want to do something illegal, like lie! But then it kind of puts it on him and not her as much. The devil made her do it!
What's it like for Mike, having Katie want to take care of him?
Collier : It's like someone showing you 10 million dollars every day, but you can't have it. It's frustrating, and it's like "God, get it out of my face."
Colombino : That all I'm worth to you? 10 million?
Collier : I actually had one million in my head, but bumped it up!
Colombino : That's actually more than I would have thought.
Collier : Having to see her every day, and having to realize that she doesn't feel that way about him. She doesn't like him that way. He does, and she knows that. That's kind of a vulnerable and a little bit embarrassing place to be. Also the fact that he's physically incapable of doing things himself, which does more to bruise the male ego... so there are a lot of things going on.
Colombino : Women don't understand that. She's like, "Why won't he just let me take care of him?" Because she's totally oblivious to his feelings, so it's not as embarrassing or difficult for her. Although it becomes increasingly so.
Mike's a smart guy; how come he's having trouble putting two and two together, and doesn't realize that Katie hit him with the car?
Collier : I don't see why he would have any idea. He's out on the road. He just left her at the house. So he knows she's at the house. He's on the highway helping some motorist. I think Katie's the last person in the world he would think it is, just because who'd have thought that she was going to overdose on pills and go out driving.
Colombino : You didn't even know how bad off I was.
Collier : It was just a random freak accident and I don't think he has any idea. Even with all Katie's doting over him?
Collier : I still don't think at all at any point... I know he didn't think that she did that. He thinks she felt bad, she feels guilty about saying "I wish you were dead." That's like saying...
Colombino : "I wish you were dead!" Collier : Like saying, "I can't stand the way your face looks," then that person gets burned in a fire that day, you would feel horrible. Because they don't look the same. He thinks she's feeling guilty about what she said.
Can these two catch a break?
Collier : I think if Katie comes off the hip and starts having sex pretty soon, I think that Mike just might stick with her!
Colombino : (Laughs) That's what a real guy would say.
Collier : I don't know. He's already been through the whole deal with Molly, who had lost her husband. And here he is, I think things didn't end real well with Molly and Mike. He cheated on her. That's just a tough thing to come off of. And he's in the exact same position with Katie. So I don't think he has the most positive outlook on it.
Colombino : But you learned from that!
Collier : Yeah, I probably learned that I don't need to be hanging around Katie anymore! He's already been through that with Molly. You gotta learn your lesson.
Colombino : That ain't gonna happen.
So, what's next for Mike and Katie?
Colombino : Just keep watching!
CBS GOSSIP - ATWT - SHOUT IT OUT (Soap Opera Digest - November 18, 2003) If you've been watching Katie during any of her adventures, you know that portrayer Terri Colombino has a healthy set of pipes. "I have a great scream - ask the sound guys," laughs Colombino, who divulges that during the recent serial-killer storyline, she had to have a stand-in. "I had a sore throat one day, so I had Jessica Dunphy [Alison] screaming for me, just so the other person in the scene would have something to react to!"
Tales of Terror (Soaps in Depth - November 4, 2003) Mark Collier (Mike) and Terri Colombino (Katie) share stories of the supernatural. Halloween is a time for candy and costumes, but also for scary stories. So I keeping with the tradition of the season, we asked Collier and Colombino if they had any eerie encounters to share.
Unfortunately, Collier never has had any encounters with the other side, but he does recall one summer as a camp counselor down in his home state of Florida when he got into the spirit of things. "We would get on the dock and tell stories to all these little kids," he explains. "One of the counselors is telling the story, and I was underneath the dock, in the water, praying to God I didn't get eaten by an alligator. "I ended up coming over the top of the dock at the [climax] of the story," he continues, "and these little kids were all screaming and crying. They hated me for the rest of the summer!" But the actor insists he was just keeping the tradition alive. "I was a camper there, and ended up becoming a counselor," Collier explains. "And I'm sure when I was 10, they did the same thing to me, and I was screaming and crying, too!"
On the other hand, when As the World Turns moved into the Brooklyn studio Another World used to call home, Colombino ran across rumors that there was one particular dressing room with a spectral residence that refused to leave. "I heard second, third, fourth-hand that two AW co-stars were making out, and they saw this ghost above them and freaked out," she reveals. "And right after that, an extra was in that room, and she came running, screaming, out of the building, going 'Get away from me!' And she never came back." Although it sounds like a soap opera urban legend, the actress isn't so quick to dismiss the idea. "It's very cold on that side of the building," she muses. "I think it's an old actress who just wants to hang out in the studio. Because you can feel her in the makeup room, too. I don't know if any of it is true. You never know with these things. "But I've never seen it," she adds with a chuckle. "And I'm kind of glad!"
Ahoy, "Matie!" (Soap Opera Digest - October 28, 2003) The Relationship Has Yet To Set Sail, But Thanks To ATWT's Terri Colombino and Mark Collier, Fans Are Already On Board
Her character had just been widowed; his had gone up against CarJack and lost. First, they were friends; two trips out of town, a raging fever and a hit-and-run later, Mike fell in love, while Katie embraced hate. Before they knew it, they had an Internet nickname ("Matie"), a legion of fans clamoring for the widow Frasier to give up the ghost of Simon and were As the World Turns' most promising romance. Meanwhile, Terri Colombino and Mark Collier are still getting acquainted.
Digest: Did you ever think they'd put your characters together?
Collier : I didn't... until I found out that Paul [Leyden, ex-Simon] was going. I think it would have been ignorant to try to put anybody between Simon and Katie, since it was going so well with them. It didn't enter my mind until Simon was leaving and things weren't going well for Mike and Molly. Then I thought, "Who will they put me with next?" I didn't think they were going to go with two cradle-robbing stories, so I figured Lucy was out. Katie was my next best bet.
Colombino : Hey, that's cradle-robbing [laughs]! I didn't [think of them together] at first because I knew that they would let Katie mourn for a while. I mean, they had to, and they did a good job with that. I started thinking about who, age-wise, Katie would go with. I thought maybe it would be Paul, when Scott [Holroyd] was still there. Mike was an option, too. And Henry! A lot of fans thought that Henry would have a chance.
Digest: They're still hoping for a triangle.
Colombino : What kind of triangle? He wants Mike, too?
Collier (laughing): Yeah, I'm not sure whose team Henry's on.
Colombino : No, Henry is in love with Katie. I love that Trent [Dawson, Henry] does that. It's sweet.
Collier : Yeah. He always does that when it is not written, obviously. He's a great actor.
Digest: Were you surprised when people embraced Katie and Mike so quickly?
Collier : Definitely. It's like coming after Tom Eplin [ex-Jake]. Any time you have two people who work so great together, like Jake and Molly, or Simon and Katie ...
Colombino : You've had some hard jobs!
Collier : It is hard. And you knew in the beginning that people weren't going to go for it.
Colombino : That's why the friendship was good, to give them time.
Collier : And I think the way they made Mike so respectful of her feelings for Simon. They made him very selfless.
Digest: Did Mike and Simon ever meet?
Collier : No, I've never worked with him.
Colombino : I remember I had a scene once where Katie ran into the Lakeview and asked the bartender if he'd seen Simon. Mike was sitting at the bar and I said "Why don't I just ask him?" And Mark goes, "Because we've never met, and I don't know who Simon is."
Digest: Any favorite scenes? Obviously, we have to discuss the sexual innuendo-while-breaking-out-of-the-closet.
Collier : Somebody said something about how we did it so seriously, but I think that's where the humor comes in. It's just a play on words. It was so obvious what this was about, but if you just focus on the task of knocking this wardrobe over, the seriousness of us trying to do this...
Colombino : ...makes it funny. Because we were laughing.
Collier : We were dying. And the crew...
Colombino : When we did it the first time, it was totally straight and perfect, the minute they yelled cut...
Collier :...the whole place burst out laughing. They actually came down and gave me a note to look like I was having more fun. But I'm like, "That's not the point. The point is to knock the wardrobe over." But I took the note, so if you look closely, I'm kind of smiling at one point.
Colombino : But I look so serious!
Collier : She looks almost militant.
Digest: Anything else?
Collier : It could be the scene that I stabbed you in the ankle three times.
Colombino : Oh, yeah, that was fun.
Collier : She was strapped to this bomb and I had a knife and I'm supposed to untie her. So, I'm worried about cutting these ropes off; I'm not paying attention. And I hit her like three times with this knife.
Colombino : Stabbed into my heel!
Collier : She's like "Oww! Oww!" And I finally realized that she is bleeding. And I was like "Ooh, sorry!" She had three slices in the back of her ankle.
Colombino : And I have a scar from when I walked backwards into all that crap in the cabin.
Collier : Yeah, we should have gotten workman's comp for Australia.
Digest: It was very physical.
Collier : Except Mike was the one getting beaten up all the time. It would have been nice to see him get a punch in.
Digest: They were completely incapable of overpowering Mordecai.
Colombino : Yes! It's embarrassing!
Collier : There were a lot of things in that room that could have gotten him. And the fact that Mike was the same size as Mordecai and he's a construction worker who's spent time in prison - I have a feeling that he can take care of himself.
Digest: And Katie's scrappy, too!
Colombino : Yeah! Every time we did a scene, they're like, "Look for a weapon, but you can't find one." I'm like "Well, there's an oar. Maybe we could hit him on the head with that."
Collier (laughing): There was a bear trap! There were a few too many things in the room that they could have easily taken him out with. But Jonno [Roberts], who played Mordecai, is a great actor and I think you have to have a menacing bad guy to make it believable. Because if you suck...
Colombino : Then it would have been really embarrassing.
Collier : We worked a lot on the fight scenes to make them look real. I thought, "If I'm going to get my ass kicked, at least it's going to look good."
Digest: Best and worst qualities?
Colombino : We just have so much fun together. It's almost like a brother/sister thing. We annoy the hell out of each other, but it's funny. And he's just a hard worker. He's always the one to be like, "Okay, let's figure this out," when I'm being lazy. I love that because it helps bring out the best in me. He cares about that, too, not just what he's doing, which is rare. His worst quality? I don't know him that well, yet. The worst is that he eats unhealthily, and I do too, when I'm not really trying. He's a bad influence in that respect.
Collier : Her best quality is that she's always in a good mood. She's always goofy and smiling in the morning. It puts a smile on your face to come to work every day. Most annoying quality [long pause]?
Digest: It's nice that it's taking so long!
Colombino : Well, we don't know each other that well, yet [laughs].
Collier : And we still have to work together, so I can't be really honest [ Colombino gasps in mock indignation]. I'm just kidding!
Digest: Did you click right away?
Collier : A lot of times, you can put two people on-screen, if they have chemistry, they don't even have to say a word. They just look at each other in a certain way. We've always tried to find moments that maybe were not written, so that you do see that they care about each other.
Colombino : He helps me all the time. I've had to cry this whole time, the last two months, and it's really taxing. So he was just playing me this song one day, right before a sad scene. We weren't even trying for this, but I just started bawling because the words kind of fit the scene. And from now on, I'm like, "Bring in a sad song tomorrow, but don't tell me what it is." Of course, it doesn't work as well when you are planning it.
Digest: What song is it?
Collier : It's from the Evanescence CD, the fourth song ["My Immortal"].
Colombino : It's so sad.
Collier : It's about a woman who loses her husband and the only thing she has left to remember him by is the baby they had together.
Colombino : I didn't get that [laughs]!
Collier : What did you get? She says, "The only thing I have left to remember is your eyes, and I have to look at them every day now."
Colombino : Are we talking about the same song?
Digest: Terri was listening to the third track, apparently.
Collier : Maybe you were!
Colombino : The one about, "When you cry, I wipe away all your tears?"
Collier : Yeah. It's about two people who are really in love, but can't be together anymore.
Colombino : Anyway, it's good stuff. And the other day, he brought in Garth Brooks's "The Dance," which is always a good one. And some other Willie Nelson thing that just made me laugh.
Collier : Hey, it works for me.
Digest: Have you tried to develop your on-screen relationship by hanging out more off-screen?
Colombino : It just automatically happens. We have the same sense of humor.
Collier : Mark and Terri have some of the same characteristics as Terri and Mike.
Colombino (laughing): Katie and Mike.
Collier : You know what I'm saying.
Colombino (still laughing): "Well, Mark thinks Terri is really nice." What is this third person stuff?
Collier : I don't know what the hell I'm saying. We have similar personalities, which makes it work. We talk on the phone more, little things like that. Ultimately, it's wanting our scenes to be the best they can.
Colombino : And, we both love Metallica!
Roundup - What soap star were you a fan of before you joined daytime? (Soap Opera Digest) Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT): "I've watched YOUNG AND RESTLESS for ... I don't even know how long. It's a toss-up between Melody Thomas Scott [Nikki] and Jeanne Cooper [Katherine] - of course, she's Mrs. Chancellor to me. They are both amazing and they are really good together. I remember way back to when Nikki was a stripper and I saw her transformation over the years. That is what's cool about soaps: You get to see these characters grow up in real time."
COPY THIS (soapoperadigest.com/features/atwt - 2003) Terri Colombino (Katie, AS THE WORLD TURNS) knows what looks good on her, stylewise. "You work with what you got," she stresses. "That is why I wear a lot of the low-slung pants and show a little tummy. One of the features that I like is my flat stomach."
Not that Colombino hasn't made some mistakes along the way. "What I'm learning to do now is buy outfits all together," she reveals. "Because I'd see a top like that and I'd love it and I'd buy it, but then I didn't have anything to wear it with."
Here are Colombino's thoughts on some of her outfits:
![]() |
"I love that top. The pants are great, but not with that top and not with those shoes. That top would look great with slimming black pants or jeans. The pants are from Jeffrey, which is in the meat-packing district [in New York]. It's a designer store that's very expensive but I got these on sale. They were a couple sizes too big, but I love to wear things on the hips so I took them up on the bottom, which I have to do anyway because I'm so short." |
![]() |
"This was from my first months on the show. I got this outfit in L.A. There are things you can get there that you can't here [in New York] that are a little more skin-baring. I would walk around New York wearing my L.A. clothes when I first moved here and people would just stare at me. I think they are both Parallel, which is a designer I really like. I still have both of those. It's a nice simple white skirt. I wore the shirt the other day and Artie (Colombino 's husband) said, 'Is that new?'" |
![]() |
"This was a movie premiere. Those pants were lined with satin, so they felt like pajama bottoms. I got them at Betsey Johnson. I went to a different store and got a nice, fitted, black shirt to go with them. I still have that top. The necklace has an antique pendant on it." |
![]() |
"This is another Christmas party. The shoes were wrong. I had some shoes to go with it but it was so snowy or rainy that I ended up wearing my boots with the skirt. I like the look, I just would now wear different shoes and definitely not the choker because it cuts me off. Hello -- roots need to be done real bad. The top is a Victoria's Secret bustier and the skirt I got three sizes too big so it would fit on my hips and then I got it shortened." |
Beyond Belief - Terri Colombino (Katie) shares her personal psychic experience (CBS Soaps In Depth Online) Long before moving to New York and landing the role of Katie on AS THE WORLD TURNS, struggling actress Terri Colombino found herself attending a performance by noted psychic James Van Praagh. "I didn't even mean to," she confesses. "I went with friends. I didn't even know what it was at the time."
Colombino was skeptical going in, but as Van Praagh began "reading" the audience, he had a vision of a stomach with a scar or hole above the bellybutton. "I was like, 'That's me! That's me!'" Colombino recalls. "I used to have my belly-button pierced, and at the time, there was a hole there, almost as big as my belly-button. And he proceeded to say all these things..." One of the psychic's predictions was that the young actress would be moving far away for a job that would change her life, and that she would be living on the water. "And two months later," she reveals, "when I got a job on BREAKER HIGH, I moved to Vancouver, which is not overseas, but still very far. And I was sitting on my balcony one day, and I was living on the water!" Colombino was stunned to find many of Van Praagh's predictions coming true in one way or another. "I moved, I got a big job, everything," she says, shaking her head in amazement. "The guy I was with at the time, he said, 'You're going to break up.' And we did."
But there was one special revelation that startled the actress beyond all others. When Van Praagh asked if the name Katherine meant anything to her, Colombino replied that it was her mother's name. But the medium insisted that it was a grandmother he was sensing, and that the person in question was deceased. "I was like, 'It can't be, because they're both alive,'" Colombino relates. "And I went home to tell my mom about the experience, and she's like, 'Your great-grandmother's name is Katherine. I didn't even know! It was so crazy! So I do believe in it."
Island Fever (CBS Soaps In Depth - October 21, 2003) Back in the summer of 2001, Katie was determined to find Simon's missing diamond in order to win his love, and dragged partner in crime Henry along to the deserted island where her hubby and Lily had been stranded and lost the gem the year before. But while the intrepid treasure hunters had to contend with a thieving seagull and a greedy hermit, there were also high jinks going on behind the cameras. Join Terri Colombino (Katie) as she shares with Soaps in Depth some of the backstage secrets of this memorable adventure.
Colombino has nothing but praise for co-star Trent Dawson (Henry), who kept everyone in stitches. "He's just hilarious," she says with a smile. "Anything he does, he does perfectly."
The actress still wonders how Henry created his elaborate drag ensemble. "I don't know," she chuckles, "Because it didn't look like something Katie would have brought! I wanted him to shave his legs, but he wouldn't."
"I think they really fully buried him," Colombino recalls of what the late Don Chastain (ex-Cooley) endured. "I think they put a bunch of blankets around him to make that the bulk of it, and then they just put sand on top. But it was still heavy, he said."
"Working in sand all of the time is not the most comfortable thing." Colombino admits. "We figured they probably just kept the sand from when Lily and Simon were there the year before!"
From martini shakers to extra clothes, Katie and Henry always had the necessities on hand. "we had this trunk," she chuckles, "and it was the endless, bottomless trunk, because things kept popping out of it."
Of course, one of the highlights of their adventure was when Henry donned his disguise and poison lipstick (!) to drug Cooley with a smooch. "That was pretty funny, when they kissed," Colombino laughs. "Because they didn't really rehearse it. You want to kiss the least amount of times as possible. And when they actually did, you didn't know what to expect!"
"I kissed him, too," she recalls with a grin. "Cooley got a lot of action on that island!"
Memento (Soap Opera Digest - October 7, 2003) Simon may be gone, but Trent Dawson (Henry) has something to remember him by - a jacket Dawson once told Paul Leyden (ex-Simon) he liked. "My birthday party was right around the time Paul was leaving," says Dawson. "He and Terri [Colombino ] bought it for me, and they actually laid down some dough. It was the sweetest thing, after I had mentioned it in passing. Now, I walk around in Simon's jacket!"
What is the craziest rumor you've read about yourself? (Soap Opera Weekly - October 7, 2003) Terri: "When Chris [Goutman] first came in as executive producer, there were rumors I was being fired after Keith Coulouris (ex-David). So I asked Chris myself. I was like 'Umm, I'm about to resign my lease. Can you tell me if this is true or not?' He said, 'Don't read that crap.'"
What was your very first fan encounter like? (Soap Opera Digest Special - Fall 2003) Terri: "I was at Bloomingdale's buying a coat, and the woman behind the counter said, 'I know that voice! Where do I know you from?' I said, 'Well, do you watch As the World Turns?' She said, 'Yes, you're Katie!' She said she never would have known if it wasn't for my voice; she wouldn't have recognized me just by looking at me. I guess I just look different."
Summer of Reunions - Pat's Personals (Soap Opera Weekly - September 30, 2003) Terri Colombino's had two sequential reunions this summer, one professional, one personal. The first was with former ATWT co-star Paul Leyden (ex-Simon), who wrote and directed a short film, Liquid Assets , in which Terri played a small part. "It was tiny, really, but I just had to be in his movie because it's brilliantly written and also because one of the strong points of Paul's and my friendship has always been that we have the same type of humor, and this short [film] is just one big joke." Here's a hint: Terri plays a nurse in a sperm bank. Others in the cast include Michael Douglas' son, Cameron Douglas, Patricia Kalember, Michelle Monaghan and Terri's husband, Artie Colombino, who also co-produced. The day after shooting wrapped Terri and Artie flew out to Albuquerque, N.M., for Terri's 10-year high school reunion, where she won "Most Unusual Career." During their eight days in New Mexico the couple treated themselves to an overnight at the Tamaya resort, "an amazing spa that inspired me to make a meditation room in my house." Terri says she was inspired to explore another type of addition after spending time with Crosby, the baby daughter of one of her best pals. "I'm in love with this little girl! She's so precious! I felt like: OK, we need one of these right away. It's a big decision, though, so I'm stepping back, preparing a little bit more. But we've been talking about it. After hanging out with her, I am definitely looking forward to that stage of life."
Terri Colombino VS. Katie Frasier (Soaps in Depth - September 9, 2003) Terri Colombino comes clean about Katie ...
How would you describe yourself?
Terri: I would say that I am caring about my family and friends, and that's what's most important to me, so everything else kind of revolves around that.
Katie: Katie would say she's ambitious and loving.
Who in the world would you most want to meet?
Terri: Cameron Crow. I'd like to be in one of his movies.
Katie: I don't know. Because she doesn't really have any ambitions right now, so I can't think of who it would be that she admires.
What is the craziest thing you've ever done?
Terri: Probably going to shoot a film in the Philippines and Hong Kong when I was 18. It was pretty crazy.
Katie: Going on that island. Or following Simon to three different islands, I guess. (Laughs) But it paid off.
What is your favorite spare time activity?
Terri: Watching Trading Spaces.
Katie: Flea market shopping for porcelain rabbits or anything that's rabbit form.
My definition of romance would have to include ...
Terri: Mine would be [husband] Artie [Colombino].
Katie: Well, hers would be Simon.
What's your favorite TV show?
Terri: The Shield is mine. Well, other than Trading Spaces.
Katie: Katie's would be Will & Grace.
What annoys you more than anything else in the world?
Terri: Traffic. (Laughs) Idiot drivers.
Katie: Women hitting on her man.
What makes you laugh?
Terri: Anyone with a good sense of humor. I'm a pretty easy audience.
Katie: Not a whole lot at the moment. Well, Simon made her laugh.
What is your motto?
Terri: "Always think positively."
Katie: Well, my favorite motto of hers was on her workout video and it says, "Squeeze it or no one else will!" (Laughs)
Roundup "What was your first impression of your co-star?" (Soap Opera Digest - September 9, 2003) Terri Colombino: "With Hunt [Block, Craig], I thought he was really unapproachable when I met him. He was this big star and a great actor and I'd heard all these things about him. And he's the most down-to-earth, funny, hilarious person ever, but I guess he can give off that intimidating air. And the day I met him, I had to do the scenes at the Endicott Awards where Katie got exposed and she was all upset and crying to her brother. Afterward, I was like, 'What was I so worried about? He's such a great person.' I love when I get to work with him."
Performer of the Week (Soap Opera Digest - August 26, 2003) Terri Colombino (Katie, AS THE WORLD TURNS) We have to admit that Terri Colombino has been overlooked for mention here, though no one would deny that she is one of ATWT's finest. It's because she injects character-defining emotions into every word that she deserves it most weeks, even (or especially) the ones in which Katie has nothing to do. She simply makes the tiniest moments memorable. We'll never forget her one-sentence mention of Bryant's death in 2001 that rates as one of the most poignant in that story, and her recent response to Alison's declaration of virginity was equally resonant.
This week was a big one for Katie, and Colombino, who has kept Katie's broken heart as a blip under a bubbly surface, had lots to do. Simon's name was mentioned, and she let the overwhelming sadness seep out as Katie finally gave in and gave up her facade. But it was still the little stuff that really got us: "It's too late to be up, especially for a rabbit," she yawned absentmindedly to Mike when he found her drunk on the couch with Snickers, and it was easy to see why he's falling hopelessly in love. The next day, Colombino infused her scenes with everything from devastation to gnawing insecurity to impetuous determination - conveyed by a subtle catch in her voice, a tilt of the head, a hand raised to her mouth and, almost impossibly, in a single look after learning of Simon's letter as a roomful of people stared to see how she'd react. Once she regained her confidence in his love, sobs were quickly replaced by breathless plans in a classic Katie transition.
We often go on about how real Katie seems, probably because Colombino has such a firm grasp on the character that it all looks effortless, though we know better - that's just the sign of a great actress. We should probably let her know that more often.
Beauty Secrets (CBS Soaps In Depth - August 26, 2003) Terri: "I've found over the years of diet and exercise and different routine that if I just listen to my body and give it what it wants, but not overeat, I'm good. Everything in moderation; that's the way I keep pretty consistent. Because if you deprive yourself of something, eventually you're going to indulge in it, so you might as well keep it in moderation the whole time!"
CBS GOSSIP - ATWT - Is That So? (Soap Opera Digest - August 26, 2003) Every once in a while, Katie makes a mistake - and Terri Colombino hears about it. "One funny thing that I didn't catch that I read in the magazine later was when Katie had a line about Margo being married to Hal. They were never married, but I didn't know - I wasn't on the show then," laughs the actress, who says that usually something like that would be caught. "It does become part of [an actor's] job, actually," she explains, especially when a different scriptwriter every day can often mean small contradictions in character and action. "So, we have to really pay attention to that so we don't look like schizophrenics!"
Back to School (Soaps in Depth - August 26, 2003) Terri Colombino chuckles as she admits that hubby Artie wasn't thrilled when she announced that they would be attending her high school reunion this summer. "But I have like, three of my best friends who live all over the place going, so I really want to see them," she added. "And we had a really great senior class. I loved so many people that I haven't gotten to see or keep up with." And while many people grimace at the thought of revisiting those years, the actress is eagerly anticipating reconnecting with her old classmates from La Cueva High School in Albuquerque, NM. "I mean, I wasn't looking forward to that senior year," Colombino now recalls. "I was so ready to get the heck out of there and get into college. But it wasn't because of the people. So I'm excited to go!"
UP-CLOSE AND PERSONAL - Georgia On Her Mind (CBS Soaps In Depth - 2003) Having marked five years on AS THE WORLD TURNS in September, Terri Colombino is firmly entrenched in viewers' minds as the feisty Katie Peretti Frasier. However, when the actress originally auditioned for the sudser back in 1998, it was supposed to be a whole different story. "I auditioned for Georgia," she reveals, While that role went to Jaime Dudney, Colombino didn't lose out completely. "They said 'Well, she's not right for Georgia, but let's keep her for something,' " she relates. "Because they knew they would want to bring in a friend - or an enemy - for Georgia that's her age. " Then the only question was what role to create for the young actress. "I think they just looked through the books and were like, 'Okay, who can we age?'" Colombino chuckles. ' "Hmm... How about Katie Peretti!''
What's the favorite classic line your character has said? (Soap Opera Digest - July 22, 2003) Terri: "She never said it, but I loved what they put on the Butt Busting Workout video poster: 'Squeeze it or no one else will!'"
The More, The Merrier? (Soap Opera Digest - July 22, 2003) Thanks to newborn Sage, there's baby fever again at ATWT, especially for Maura West (Carly) and Terri Colombino (Katie). "You get a baby around the set, and [Maura's] like, 'I've got to have another one! I'm going to break down!' It's infectious - they're so cute," laughs Michael Park (Jack) of his co-star. "Oh, my God, it makes me want to have a baby!" sighs Colombino. "Maura said, 'Tell Chris [Goutman, executive producer] that it's his fault if Terri or I get pregnant because we play with these babies all day, and they're so precious!'"
Future Behind the Bar? - Pat's Personals (Soap Opera Weekly - July 15, 2003) Terri Colombino was proud of her progress she'd made since her last stint as a celebrity bartender, raising money for 9/11 widows from the local Upper West Side firehouses. Terri was even overheard by one of the Blondies owners giving a thoroughly professional rundown of the various versions of Buffalo Wings. "So if I ever get let go from a soap, I know where I can have a job, maybe." Of course, she concedes, it helps to have the bar's professional pourers standing by. "So we can just look at them and go: 'How do you make a sex on the beach?'" Her most difficult moment came when someone ordered a Malibu Bay Breeze. "I thought she said Malibu Baby. I said, 'What's a Malibu Baby?"" Why, I told her, that's what you get after you have sex on the beach.
Summer Soaps Mean More Sex (CBS NEWS.COM - The Early Show - July 4, 2003) During the summer, as the primetime dramas on television typically drift into reruns, daytime television is heating up. Love in the afternoon has long been the motto of daytime television and it's a dose of sex appeal that changes with the seasons. So to turn up the heat on their summer ad campaign, reports The Early Show entertainment contributor Laurie Hibberd, soap stars from Guiding Light and As The World Turns are at the beach, shooting new promos designed to accentuate their sexuality. Laughing, Terri Colombino, who plays Katie in "As The World Turns," says, "Daytime is very sexy and you get used to working with people pretty closely and, luckily, they are all pretty good looking." The "Hot Enough For You" campaign features some of daytime's newest talent as well as some veteran heartthrobs. Bradley Cole, Jeffrey from "Guiding Light," says, "I'll tell you with some of these young bucks here, it's a little intimidating." These promos will complement the TV commercials already on the air. Real Andrews, who plays Walker on "As The World Turns." says in the summer sexiness is the way producers attract viewers. "Our wardrobe gets less and less, the scenes become more about the bedrooms, and a lot of kissing scenes," he says. And why is summer time the right time to promote sexier scenes on the soaps? Mary Alice Dywer-Dobbin has this answer: "There are a lot of women available to watch in the summer who are not necessarily as available to watch in the winter. Kids are out of school, vacation time, and it's also a time when we can get some on-air promotion." She is the executive in charge of production for both "Guiding Light" and "As The World Turns" and she notes nobody is complaining about the sexiness of the shows. She says, "It's very interesting, our audience, I think, enjoys it and they know what they're getting in daytime and so it doesn't bother them. They really take to it." And if a sexier summer season is welcomed by the fans, think about how much fun it is for the actors. Colombino says, "I mean, I'm married to a beautiful man, but I can hang out with the boys." She agrees a girl can look. "They're looking, so why can't we?"
Who from your show would you call at 3AM if you were in trouble? (CBS Soaps in Depth - July 1, 2003) Terri: "Martha [Byrne, Lily/Rose]. She would just do anything for anyone. She lives close, so that helps. And we're close. I know that it's a true friendship and I would do the same for her."
Working Girl (CBS Soaps in Depth - July 1, 2003) Katie has been a journalist, an exercise guru, a private eye and now a nurse's aide at the hospital. But Terri Colombino knows exactly where she'd love to see her alter ego get a job. "I think Katie would much rather wash hair at the salon with Rose and Mitzi. That would be fun. I love working with [Rose's portrayer] Martha [Byrne.] I think they need a manicurist or hair washer or something like that." But that's not to say that Katie's current gig isn't without a certain appeal. "I love working at the hospital in the way that I get to work with Don Hastings (Bob) and Larry Bryggman (John), because they are just hilarious.
Number of months' notice required for vacation time? (Soap Opera Digest Special - Summer 2003) "At least three or four," says Terri Colombino. "And the earlier you tell them, the better your story will be. Or, you might have to do three episodes in one day before you leave and two in one day when you get back. And then it's hardly a vacation!"
Tip Sheet: How Tos From Your Favorite Stars (Soap Opera Digest Special - Summer 2003) As for fans hanging around outside the studio, the actors report that it doesn't happen often. Terri: "Every once in awhile, someone will come and say, 'There are some fans outside,' and we go out there. Because if they come all the way out there, it's a big deal. [As for what to say, just] be honest unless it's something really bad! Sometimes, fans think we are the characters, or that we're not human and don't have feelings. So, they'll say, 'You're much prettier on television.' You wouldn't necessarily say that to a friend."
CBS Gossip - Toss the Salad (Soap Opera Digest - June 24, 2003) These days, fans are being nice to former on-screen bad girl Terri Colombino (Katie), but random pedestrians are another story. Here's her Emmy-day recap: "I drove into the city, picked up my shoes ... got assaulted," she laughs. "I almost hit this guy with my car, so I honked my horn, and he got mad at me and started threatening to kick my ass. When I pretty much made fun of him for wanting to kick a girl's ass, he went to the deli, bought some tomatoes and threw them at me! I had parked and gone into the store to get my shoes. When I came out, he was running at me with the tomatoes in his hands. But he missed!"
Chatter Box: Terri Colombino Answers Your Questions (Soap Opera Weekly - June 17, 2003)
Katie has had many jobs since coming to Oakdale. What do you think she should do for a living? - Alex, via e-mail
She's definitely got to get out of the hospital! The bedpans and all the dead people are making me sick! (laughs)
How much input, if any, do the actors have in their storylines? - Kiki, via e-mail
Terri: Not a whole lot. If you have a good relationship with someone in the writing department you might be able to find things out and make a suggestion here and there. But there are so many people the stories have to go through just to get approved, they're not as concerned with how we feel about it. When I knew Paul (Leyden, ex-Simon Frasier) was leaving, I went to Hogan (Sheffer, ATWT's head writer) and asked him if Henry could move in with Katie, because she would be scared living alone in the cottage. He loved the idea and went with it.
Do you have any pets? What's it like working with Snickers? - Roger Newcomb, New York
Terri: Yes, I have my little Jack, a West Highland white terrier, otherwise known as a Westie. He will be 2 in October. He's extremely smart, energetic, and sneaky, but very loving. I love Snickers, who is a girl in real life. Snickers is a boy on the show, so she's a very good actress. She gets scared, but once she gets into my arms, she cuddles right in. She's been working on the show since she was a baby.
Now that Simon is gone, can we expect to see more interaction between Katie and Henry? I always enjoy the humor between those two characters. - Terri Washington, via e-mail
Terri: Thank you. I enjoy the humor between them as well. I haven't heard of anything happening [there], but I think Henry will always be in Katie's life. They are living together now, so I hope something comes out of that because it could be hilarious. I love working with Trent (Dawson, Henry) and I love getting to be funny, so let's hope that happens soon. He still has Simon's letter, so something has to come out of that.
What are your favorite TV shows? Have you ever met a star you were a big fan of? - S. Miller, Minneapolis
Terri: Six Feet Under, The Shield, 24, Will & Grace. I saw Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie, Sex and the City) in the bathroom at a reading her husband, Matthew Broderick, was doing. I just smiled at her and she smiled back at me and that was enough for me (laughs). If I could follow her career, I'd be a happy girl.
What is the craziest thing you've done for love. - Suzi, via e-mail
Terri: Getting engaged after only six months. I'm such a planner, but I just loved Artie so much that when he got down on his knee and proposed I was like, "Absolutely!" There was no doubt in my mind.
How do you get your arms ready for tanktop season? (Soap Opera Weekly - June 17, 2003) Terri: "You have to work everything - the shoulders, biceps and triceps - to make it all look good, because if you work one and not the other it will be out of proportion. Do light weights, lots of reps."
What's the most outrageous rumor you've heard about yourself? (CBS Soaps in Depth - June 17, 2003) Terri: "In high school, some people started a rumor that I was on cocaine. Can you believe that? I couldn't believe people believed that! And especially when you're that age, everything is such a big deal. Now, I'd be like, 'If you believe that, then you're stupid.' But then, I was just so upset that I thought people thought that of me. It was really awful!"
Look, Ma: We Won! (Soap Opera Digest - June 10, 2003) "I was trying to get close to Chris [Goutman, executive producer] so my mom could see me," said ATWT's Terri Colombino when the show picked up its best show trophy. "Last time we won, you could only see a corner of my face."
Star Style At The Emmys (Soap Opera Digest) Terri Colombino
HAIR: "Gwen Stefani was the inspiration, be we're kind of doing our own thing," laughed the actress, who had extensions added for the big night. "I'm not worried about rain - this thing is shellacked."
GOWN: "It's Lela Rose," noted Colombino. "I wore one of her dresses for the Technical Emmys and I'm really in love with this designer. She has feminine, beautiful-without-being-too-girly clothes." |

Woman on the Verge (CBS Soaps in Depth - May 28, 2003) Terri Colombino forecasts the future for a suddenly-single Katie
When As the World Turns' Katie and Simon shared their heartwrenching final scenes together, Terri Colombino had no trouble whatsoever conjuring up the emotions necessary to produce her character's tears. "Actually, at first I didn't feel the last scene, and I started to freak out," she recalls. "I think I was kind of maybe putting up a wall and denying that this was it. But when we did that very last scene, that's where it really hit me, and I could not stop crying." However, while that was the end of the Frasiers' marriage, off screen it was a very different story for Colombino and co-star Paul Leyden. "The funny thing is, after the scene was over, he came over and hugged me," she relates. "He's like, 'I'll miss you,' and I was like, 'I'll miss you, too!'" then the actress laughs and adds, "Then he goes, 'Well, I'll see you tonight!'"
Just because Leyden has left daytime doesn't mean that he's out of Colombino's life completely. "We'll always still hang out," she says with a smile, "because we've become such good friends. We actually saw each other more outside of work than we did at work!"
Still, when Colombino returned to the studio for her first episodes without her on-screen hubby, there were adjustments to be made. "It was weird," she confesses. "I felt like such a loner. You know how you have your buddy at school and then they're sick for the day and you have no one to goof around with? I just felt a little... lonely." Luckily, there were enough distractions to take her mind off her missing mate. "At the same time, there're so many great people at work that I goof off with, too," she confesses. I still have my Trent [Dawson, Henry] and my Martha [Byrne, Lily/Rose] and Hunt [Block, Craig]. So [my blues] didn't last for too long.
Of course, while Katie has every right to be miserable, how long does the actress think it will take for her alter ego to get back on her feet? "Well, considering this is a soap opera, not long!" Colombino laughs. "She's always been a survivor anyway, so she's going to let herself wallow in self pity for about two days and then get on with it." And a new friendship with Oakdale's resident good guy Mike Kasnoff might be just the ticket to a new outlook on life. "I like how that's happening because it's not a romantic thing," Colombino says. "Katie's still in love with Simon, and Mike's still in love with Molly, so that's appealing to her because there's no threat of him hitting on her." Unfortunately, the ingenue also realizes that while Katie may have seen the last of Simon, she may not be able to erase her feelings as easily. "I think it's one of those things that sometimes you put so far in the back of you mind that it's not going to come up for a long time," Colombino muses, "and then it comes back to bite you."
Of course, in her personal life, the actress is enjoying wedded bliss with husband Arthur as they approach their second anniversary. "Loving living in our house, and... uh..." she happily relates, suddenly finding herself at a loss for words. Then she laughs and concludes, "I guess there's really not that much to report!" Just like on soaps, a happy marriage can equal an uneventful storyline. "That's true," Colombino chuckles, then quickly adds, "Oh, God, but please let it be happy! I'd rather be boring and happy." "But I'd rather have Katie be exciting and mean again," she concludes with a twinkle in her eye. "She can be a bitch when she needs to be. I'd just like to see it more often!
FYI
Birthday: January 28
Wedding anniversary: September 7
Giving thanks: The weekend of the ATWT Fan Club Luncheon, Colombino had a special meal with the fans who created a website devoted to the Frasiers. "This group of fans is amazing," she says, "and they've done so much for us. They kind of got the shaft at the end of the Simon-and-Katie storyline, so we wanted to really give them something special."
The Bachelorette ... To which handsome hunk should Katie use to quench her thirst? Terri Colombino shares her thoughts on finding her alter ego's Mr. Right (Now): "I have to first start off by saying that it needs to be a while, because Katie just lost the love of her life," she laughs. "But if she has to move on..."
Mike Kasnoff: "I think Mike's a good match because he just seems like a good person. He's... hot, obviously. And just a down-to-earth person."
Henry Coleman: "Henry would probably be the closest choice, because he's the closest to her. But I love the back-and-forth, love/hate friendship, so maybe we'll keep it at that."
Chris Hughes: "Well, Chris and Katie have some issues. The things that she did to him were just unforgivable. But that's a possibility, too, if he's able to truly forgive her."
Holden Snyder: "Absolutely not! That's a definite no. No more married men."
Reading Between the Lines (Soap Opera Digest - May 6, 2003) How can you tell a newbie from a vet? The greener they are, the more they tend to know - about story, that is. "Bailey (Chase, Chris) still reads his scripts a week in advance," dishes Martha Bryne (Lily/Rose). "You go through so many stages," shares co-star Terri Colombino. "Peyton (List, Lucy) and Jessie [Dunphy, Alison] aren't the new girls anymore. Bailey was like, 'Well, next week...' And they were like, 'Ha! He's still at the point where he reads the script a week ahead of time.' When I started, I remember seeing Martha learning her lines in the morning and thinking, 'How the hell does she do that? She's amazing.'" Byrne adds, "You can't dwell on it. The script's in the garbage as soon as you're done with it!"
12,000th episode (SoapCity Online - May 6, 2003) On May 6, 2003, As the World Turns proudly aired their 12,000th episode! In honor of this historic occasion, SoapCity asked your favorite ATWT stars, "Since you've been on the show, what line does it feel like you've said 12,000 times?" Terri Colombino (Katie): "What do I say a lot? Anyone's name. We always say people's names like five times in a scene. I hate that."
Star Maps (Soap Opera Digest - May 6, 2003) It started out as a fun experiment, but we ended up completely freaking out 11 soap stars! Armed with only the dates, times and places of their births, renowned astrologer and best-selling author Maria Shaw looked up to the sky and managed to pretty much nail their personalities. Read on for her analysis and predictions, as well as the shocked responses from the stars, one of whom made us swear that we didn't fix the results!
Terri Colombino, Katie, AS THE WORLD TURNS ... Birth date: January 28 ... Born In: Bloomington, IN ... Zodiac Sign: Aquarius ... Best Traits: Friendly, humanitarian ... Bad Habits: Cool, aloof ... Best Love Matches: Libra, Gemini, Aries, Sagittarius ... Fast Fizzles: Cancer, Scorpio, Taurus
Shaw sees: "This is one smart cookie! Her only downfall is that she analyzes things too much; her mind is always ticking. Terri likes to have fun, though: Quite the social butterfly, she treats friends like family. She goes out of her way to help people and make new acquaintances feel comfortable. She also enjoys the latest fashions and fads. I bet if we took a tour of her closet, we'd find every shoe ever made, along with matching bags and accessories. She has an eye for detail and a flair for fashion. The past seven years have been crazy for her! Her motto should have been 'Expect the unexpected.' Life has been a wild roller coaster with lots of twists and turns, but things will start to slow down a bit by November. Aquariuses are known to be free spirits, and that's somewhat true of Terri, but she also has another side to her that longs for the home with the white picket fence and all that goes with it. We'll find her settling down even more within the next two years. Love is grand, especially June through December, and Terri may find her biological clock ticking, too! Next year, there's lots of gossip surrounding her. Could she switch shows? Will her character change direction? Whatever the story, Terri is coming into a 'destiny period.' The next year or two will be a time of spiritual growth in which she'll learn more about herself than ever before. She's on the verge of deep discovery and should already feel as if something 'big' is about to happen. I think she'll delve more into meditation, yoga and positive affirmations to create an inner peace."
Colombino's Response: "I just joined a yoga class! She's very good, and with the bad points, too. [My husband] Artie is a Libra, so that's good for love matches. Oh, my God, that's so true about analyzing things too much. And I do like fashion; I get rid of stuff, but it's pretty damn close. It's actually kind of scary, especially the thing about how I have a free spirit, but at the same time I crave the house and the white picket fence. That's always my dilemma: Do I stay with the show, have a family and be secure, or leave and try bigger things? I'm always back and forth."
What magazines do you read, and what magazines does your character read? (SoapCity Online - May 2003) On Monday, May 5, the gorgeous actresses of As the World Turns and Guiding Light mixed and mingled inside the Cosmopolitan Ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel in New York City with editors representing magazines ranging from Woman's Day to Essence, Jane to Fit Pregnancy, Good Housekeeping to Shape, and AARP Magazine to Seventeen. Not only was SoapCity there to exclusively cover this elite event for our readers, but we also had a few questions of our own for the actresses. We asked your favorite ladies of daytime. "What magazines do you read, and what magazines does your character read?" Terri Colombino: "I read In Style and US Weekly. And Katie definitely reads US Weekly, too, because we like the gossip about the stars. I think we're very similar in that regard. And we both read Lucky, to see what the new styles are. Plus, they've got those stickers: "yes," "maybe," "no," you can put on each page. It's a definite Katie magazine.
What are your beauty secrets?
Cannot live without: Creme de la Mer, Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara, Origins Never a Dull Moment
Favorite lipstick: M.A.C. Lip Pencil in "Spice," Stila Lip Glaze in "Watermelon"
Personal Beauty tips: "Try to get a facial every couple of months. This keeps your skin deeply clean."
A World of 'Fools' (Soap Opera Weekly - April 29, 2003) Terri Colombino is pregnant. At least that's what she told her bosses as an April Fools' Day joke. "I don't know what got into me - I was like a little imp," she smiles. Her first victims were the ATWT writing staff. "Hogan (Sheffer, head writer) has said in the past, 'Please don't get pregnant for a couple of years.' Since I'm married and we've been together for a while, they always get scared. So I peeked my head into the writers' office and said, 'Guess what? I'm pregnant!' Hogan's head just fell." Once the writers realized it was a prank, they urged Colombino to pull the same stunt on executive producer Chris Goutman, who was with other producers and crew at the time. "I went into the control room and said, 'I've been really scared to tell you this, so I'm just going to blurt it out - I'm pregnant.' Then I left the room, ran out on set, got in front of the camera and went 'April Fools!' I heard that nobody said a word when I left, then it was a sigh of relief. I walked back in and said, 'Please don't play a joke on me and tell me I'm fired because I don't think I can handle it. I'm good at giving jokes, but I can't take them.' They said, 'Well, at least you can admit it, but we are thinking one word: recast.'" On a roll, she then called her husband Artie, a huge New York Yankees fan, who was concerned about Derek Jeter's dislocated shoulder. "I told him I heard Jeter's shoulder was broken,' chuckles Colombino, who adds that her hubby wasn't amused when she revealed that it was a joke. 'He said it was horrible and I ruined his whole day. Then I felt bad." At least she didn't trick him about being pregnant.
Terri Has Tips For 'Soap' Hopefuls (CBS NEWS.COM - The Early Show - April 23, 2003) (CBS) "Just be yourself," Terri Colombino, a regular on "As The World Turns" tells would-be soap-opera actors. "Bring a part of you to the character, because that's really what they're looking for." She should know. She has been nominated for an Emmy for Most Outstanding Younger Actress.
On Wednesday, she helped with The Early Show's Soap Star Screen Tests for Dustin Price and Buffy Cannon. At the end of the screen-test week, two actors will get roles this summer on "As The World Turns." Colombino said when she started out, she did not audition for the part of Katie Peretti Frasier. "They ended up liking what I did, not for that particular part but for a different part," she said.
Dustin and Buffy, like the other participants of the Soap Star Screen Test series have had a few lines on "As The World Turns" when the show took to the road last fall for their "Catch Us If You Can" college tour.
Buffy, first actor to audition on Wednesday, was discovered at Rhodes College from which she'll graduate this summer. Dustin actually traveled from his home in Austin, Texas, to audition for and appear on the daytime drama episode in Nashville. Considering that the 10 participants have most of their acting experience on stage, Colombino said, "The preparation is the same. You really want to work on the character. It's fast-moving just as theater is. But we get a couple extra takes. So that's always good." Though Colombino said it can be nerve-racking doing a live screen test, she said Dustin and Buffy did well.
On Thursday, two more contestants test for their chance at stardom. Joining them will be Mark Collier, who plays construction worker Mike Kasnoff on "As The World Turns."
Recommended List - Vacation Station (Soap Opera Digest - April 22, 2003) Terri Colombino says to steal away to... "I just went to Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa [in California]. It's really beautiful. Sonoma's fun and relaxing because you get to go to all the wineries, and this place is beautiful.
Couple Update (CBS Soaps In Depth - April 22, 2003) BAR NONE: Married for over a year, Terri Colombino (Katie) and her husband, Arthur, seem like they were meant to be together. But actually, their first date was nearly a disaster when the bar that he had planned to take her to had unexpectedly closed down the week before. "We met there," she recalls with a chuckle, "and he was standing in front of it with this sad look on his face. So we went to [the place] across the street, had margaritas and just talked." And once they were finally able to sit down and get to know each other, the couple clicked instantly. "It's like we just thought the same about everything," Colombino says. "He was the male version of me. I drove off in the cab and thought, 'Wow. This one could be good!'"
Bad Girls (Soap Opera Digest - April 15, 2003) Katie probably isn't the best role model for Alison, and Jessica Dunphy (Alison) reports that Terri Colombino has been a bit of a playful influence in real life, too. "The first day we were working together, we had all this time to kill, so we were being mischievous," Dunphy recalls. "We were cutting out people's heads from soap magazines, taking news headlines, making copies and going all over the studio. I felt like we were going to be sent to the principal's office!"
Long and Short of It (Soaps in Depth - March 25, 2003) Is there something in her closet that Terri Colombino can't bear to part with? "I have some shorts I bought in Paris, with my parents, the first time I ever went to Europe," she admits. "They're red with white flowers, and there are these long strings that you tie - that's how they stay on. They're really cute." And while she may not wear them all the time, at least they still serve a purpose: "They're the way I gauge if I've gained weight!"Colombino explains with a laugh. "If they're tight, I know I've gained a little; if they fit, I'm right around where I should be; and if they're loose, then I'm really skinny!" That's a Fact - Colombino admits that, when she was little, she had a crush on Gilligan from Gilligan's Island .
Do you have anything in your closet that still has the tags on it that you know you'll never wear? (Soap Opera Weekly, March 18, 2003) Terri: "I did until two weeks ago. It was a cute babydoll dress from Express that I got on sale a year ago. I was going out to dinner, I had worn out all my winter clothes and hadn't been shopping in forever, so I ripped off the tags and wore it."
Valentine Shopping: Pat's Personals (Soap Opera Weekly, March 11, 2003) Most people wouldn't consider schlepping another couple on a romantic Valentine's getaway, but Artie and Terri Colombino thought it would be fun to team up with best pal Don Jeffcoat (ex-Joey, One Life to Live ) and his lady, dancer Heather Oberly. Besides, Long Story Short , the indie feature Artie and Donny made together was being shown at a film festival near The Stanton House Inn, a charming bed-and-breakfast in Greenwich, Conn., where they booked two rooms.
"Theirs had a fireplace, ours had a balcony," Terri said. "Before dinner Artie and I went to their room to play games and have drinks. At one point Donny and Artie went back to our room to have a cigarette on the balcony. Heather and I kept on playing and didn't miss them at first, but after a while we realized they'd been gone a really, really long time. I was like, 'What could they possibly be doing, my husband and her boyfriend, on Valentines Day together in a different room?' We went to my room and knocked on the door, and no one was there. Heather went downstairs, looked for the car; it wasn't gone. It was freezing out, snow all over, and they didn't take heavy coats, so we knew they hadn't gone for a walk.
"Finally, we had to get someone to come to the front desk and give us an extra key. We let ourselves in, and Donny came running toward the balcony door, banging on it and shouting: 'We're locked out!' There were no stairs leading down from the balcony, and it faced toward the woods, so no one could hear them calling. They were out there a half-hour, trying to figure out what to do. They were frozen -- but laughing."
They warmed up over dinner, then came back for another round of dominoes. "We forgot we weren't in a hotel and were laughing a bit, not really loudly, but somebody knocked on the door and asked us to keep it down. I was afraid we were going to get into trouble, because it's very kind of chichi, and you don't want them thinking you're these crazy college kids. The next morning at breakfast we were looking around at the other couples, putting our bets on who it was who had complained. We all picked different people. And, luckily, whoever it was probably didn't suspect we were the ones making the noise."
Despite the mishaps, Terri rates this Valentines Day heaps above last year's, when she got her wisdom teeth out. And Artie gave her the perfect gift: "He wrote me a love song."
What's the most soaplike moment you've had in real life? (Soap Opera Digest - March 4, 2003) Terri: "It was when [my husband] Artie was trying to explain to me how his parents met. They're kind of related but not by blood! It was like, 'His mom's sister's husband's sister's husband is her dad's brother.' It's one of those things that you try to explain, and it sounds worse than on a show."
Expression of Love (CBS Soaps in Depth - February 25, 2003) Terri Colombino and husband Arthur never have had a problem sharing their feelings for each other. "A lot of people are closed off, and they don't express their feelings a lot," she muses. "I think we do." But the actress also found a way to express her love for her husband in a more tangible way by creating a future family heirloom out of a pair of heart-shaped lockets. "I got them at Bloomingdale's," Colombino reveals. "I saw them in the catalog, and I've always loved lockets. You never see them anymore. So I made Artie's mom and my mom these lockets with our pictures in them from the wedding. They fit perfectly." And while giving may be its own reward, she also received a little something in return. "I liked them so much," Colombino adds with a chuckle, "that I went and bought myself one and made another for myself!"
Ten Stars Everyone Loves (Soap Opera Digest - February 11, 2003) We all try not to play favorites, but with these actors, who could help it? Here, their coworkers pay tribute by gushing about everything from supportiveness to sex appeal that makes them so special.
Terri Colombino (Katie) on Don Hastings (Dr. Bob Hughes): "He's the wittiest, funniest man ever. My favorite thing about him is that he has to do the Thanksgiving toast speech every year. It's very sentimental, so it always ends up making me cry when he actually does it for tape, but when he's rehearsing, he'll come up with the most hilarious things. He'll change around a couple of words, and he's so deadpan that everybody's cracking up. And the very next take is for tape, and it's so perfect because it will make you cry. And he doesn't even laugh! He never laughs, which is why he's so funny. He could have been Johnny Carson. He's totally sexy, too. He has that star quality that never goes away."
"We always got to open one present on Christmas Eve, and I loved that..." (Soap Opera Weekly) Terri Colombino: "We always got to open one present on Christmas Eve, and I loved that. You got rid of some of the anxiety and excitement of Christmas the night before. We'd always open it right before midnight Mass. So, I guess I'm going to do that with my kids. When little presents would show up, I'd shake them around and look at them - "Which one will I open Christmas Eve?"
