World's Apart (Soap Opera Digest - December 16, 2006) AS THE WORLD TURNS's Katie is about to lose everything, but Terri Colombino's life is full
Terri Colombino has been crying a lot lately. It's Katie's fault, of course, for messing up her life so badly that her portrayer is often in tears at AS THE WORLD TURNS all day, but all of that devastation takes its toll. "I'm such an emotional, empathetic person, and I was taking on, in real life, what was going on with Katie. I couldn't leave it at the studio. I was kind of depressed and anxious. It was just too much for me," says the actress, whose character is in the process of destroying both of the popular romances that have defined her for the last five years to facilitate the exits of her leading men, Mark Collier (Mike) and Paul Leyden (Simon), at basically the same time. On-screen, Katie takes the blame; off-screen, Colombino has to answer for her.
She's been thinking about this a lot lately, especially after Katie's self-destructive actions - and Colombino's perceived thoughts about them - caused a handful of "Matie" fans to fire off some scathing e-mails to express their disappointment in Colombino, as a person. She takes that kind of thing to heart, so much so that she searched through all of her recent interviews for the offensive comments - surely a misquote, she figured - and came up empty. "I guess it's the way they're reading into it or maybe just the fact that Katie and Simon get more press. Simon in general gets more press than anyone on our show, so they're usually asking me about him and it comes across that I'm favoring him," she shrugs, still smarting. "But I don't write these stories; I play them. The reporters ask, 'What is Katie doing this week?' I'm just saying what I filmed. Katie deciding to sleep with Simon wasn't my idea. It wasn't because I like working with Paul better than I like working with Mark - that's ridiculous. But because I'm such a sensitive person, it affects me, and I get really hurt. I love them both, and there are beautiful things about each relationship that I love. If Mark had left and was thinking about coming back, of course I would encourage him to do it, too."
Like the storyline, the fact that both men are leaving is obviously out of her control. "It's not really my place to tell them what to do; I can just support them." she notes. "Selfishly, I would like them both to stay, but I know that it's better for them to leave. Neither of them have families, they're still young and hot and amazing actors, so why not go and see what else is out there? During those scenes, I think the reason I got so emotional and let it affect me outside the studio is because it is kind of real, in a way. I know it's coming. And it's not just that I'm playing that onscreen; these two guys that I have great friendships with are going to be gone at once. So it's a bummer for Katie and for me, but I do have great relationships with so many people on the show. It's not like I'm losing my only friends."
It's that feeling of family and stability at ATWT that led her to re-sign her contract two-and-a-half years ago - daughter Julia had just been born - and is what makes her inclined to stay now, even as she weighs her other options. "I feel like I'm on the best show for me. And the best one in general, I might as well say it. The show has always been so good to me and I love it there, so it wasn't really that I wanted to leave anyway," she reasons. "However, I also look at the fact that Julia's young enough to where if I did get something else and had to live in L.A. for a while, it would be okay. Two years ago, I wasn't in the mood to do that, but now, I get excited when my agents call and say I have an audition. I just go with my gut instinct and see what else is out there before I get - I hate to say it - too old to have those opportunities anymore."
So she is auditioning, mostly for sitcoms, ideally based in New York. "Which isn't very likely, but I'm not really looking forward to moving to L.A. I love my life here, But I would love to do a sitcom. I just enjoy going to work and laughing. But I wouldn't want to leave unless it's something really, really good, I get to act great storylines every day where I am. So I understand what I have," she emphasizes. But while she's at it, she'd love for Katie to grow up and get her sense of humor back. "I've always loved that they've given me that comedy [at ATWT]," she says. "Because I'd rather be the goofy one that makes you laugh rather than the one you cry along with."
SAD SONGS SAY SO MUCH
Colombino uses her ipod for two purposes: working and working out. In the gym, it's all about hip-hop and Metallica. "It's from growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico," she laughs, "but Mark [Collier, Mike] is very proud of me for being a Metallica fan. It helps me work out because it's so angry. At work, I listen to sad songs right before I do a scene. Music is so powerful in that it can dictate your emotions. Ask any of the crew members: there's Mark and I listening to our ipods right before we go on, and then we throw them on the set and go." She gets many of the tunes (from bands including Lifehouse and 3 Doors Down) from watching fan-made videos with Collier. "I can't use the same one too many times because it loses its potency, so I'm always asking people, 'What's the saddest song you've ever heard?' I always need new ones! But one that I always go back to, which is hysterical, is Celine Dion's 'A New Day Has Come.' It's about her little boy, and it always touches me because it makes me think about Julia."

Just The Facts
Birthday: January 28
She Watches: Not much TV, but PROJECT RUNWAY is can't miss.
She Subscribes To: Us Weekly. "When I do have time to relax, I want to be entertained. It's kind of embarrassing, but I would much rather hear about [celebrity news] than all the God-awful things that are happening in the world right now. The funny thing is, I am kind of on the other side of it, too, in that things get said about me in magazines, and I get upset if it's not true."
Cooking Specialty: "I'm more of a baker. I do really good pecan pie, my dad's Southern recipe. And lemon bars."
Meet The Parents: "When it comes to 2 1/2-year-old daughter Julia, Colombino is more of a disciplinarian; husband Artie is a softie. "It's so funny because we're the opposite in everything else. Any time the phone company needs to be yelled at, he's the one to do it. I hate confrontation!"
Her Life Right Now, In A Word: "Evolving. Because it is changing so much, but moving so quickly."
Very Hot Shots (Soap Opera Digest - December 16, 2006) Paul Leyden (Simon, ATWT)
"You look at him and are immediately attracted - I think anyone who's breathing sees that. But once you get to know him, he's so charismatic and funny and smart. His personality is the hottest thing about him. There's something about Australian men - and him in particular - that is so sexy to women because they're 'manly' men, but they still have this sensitive side. It's very intriguing." - Terri Colombino (Katie)
"If you could switch storylines who's would you want?" (Soap Opera Digest - November 2006) Terri Colombino: "I guess if I could sing, I would want Gwen's [Jennifer Landon] storyline because it's such and inspiring thing to see someone fulfilling their dream. I remember when Victoria Rowell [Dru] first started on YOUNG AND RESTLESS and she was a ballerina and a model. When I was a teenager, I watched that and thought, 'That's so cool ---- she gets to act and dance and model.' I like those kinds of storylines. But I can't sing, so I couldn't do Gwen!"
Strange Bedfellows (Soap Opera Weekly - November 2006) Longtime ATWT viewers are familiar with Katie and Simon's wacky fantasies, but when the show recently added Carly to the mix, it made for some strange bedfellows. "Oh, God, the one where we were all in bed together was hysterical," guffaws Terri Colombino (Katie). "I don't know how we got through that because Maura (West, Carly) kept laughing. We were all laughing. The crew guys were like, 'Whoa, what's going on today? Is there a threesome on the show?'"
Soap Stars Interviewed: Their favorite charities! (www.soaps.com - November 14, 2006) Terri Colombino: (Katie, As the World Turns) spoke with Soaps.com Editor-in-Chief, Christine Fix, about her "Ban It" cause, recently. Here is what she has to say about her favorite charity.
"The issue of my tee is BAN HATE! Because hate is the root cause the other things we would all love to see banned things like war, violent crime and abuse. The design of the lotus flower is to signify the positive change that can come from love which, to me, is the antidote to hate. I choose to give the proceeds of this auction to the Maria Ferrari Children's hospital because I have witnessed, first hand, the power of the love they can give to the children they treat and the parents who are hurting for their children. When true love and care is given to people in a desperate time, they tend to have a positive change in their life and pass that love on to others when they need it (a kind of "pay it forward") and that is one way we can BAN HATE! I am so proud to be a part of something so positive that can inspire others to do what they can to make the changes that they wish for possible."
What would you ban if you could?
That is the question BAN posed to some of the entertainment world's most popular stars. But BAN didn't just want to hear the answers; they wanted these celebs to show the whole world how they feel, so BAN gave celebs 'American Apparal' t-shirts and asked them all to create their own design depicting what they'd like to ban!
The result is the BAN IT! Charity Auction, which will be up on eBay beginning October 15, 2006! Are you planning on helping the cause?!
Not only will you be able to own a one-of-a-kind t-shirt that was created by your favorite celebrity, you'll also be able to feel good that 100% of all proceeds from each winning bid will go to a charity that helps to ban the social cause represented in the t-shirt design.
Terri Colombino, who portrays Katie Peretti Frasier Kasnoff, on daytime's second longest running soap,.. As the World Turns is an angel!
Terri's publicist contacted me recently, regarding the 'Ban It!' Charity event that Terri is participating in. Some of the hottest stars out there, including our friendly soap stars have taken time from their busy schedules to take a stand to ban the issues that matter to them. I was very thankful to Terri for taking time out of her busy schedule to give me a shout, concerning this charity auction. Terry was happy to oblige, "Thank you for getting the word out!" she says.
I asked Terri about how she became involved in the 'Ban It' Charity Auction, she told me, "They contacted me through my manager because they knew how much I like to be involved with as many charities as I can, and they also know how involved daytime fans like to be as well!"
Terri's publicist sent me a few photos of Terri's cute tee, along with the Original auction card that Terri used. You'll notice that when asked, "What would you ban if you could?" Terri selected to ban 'Hate'. Part of the auction is not to answer the question with words but to answer by creating a design on a t-shirt to show just what the stars would ban if they could. I asked Terri if she could give her fans a little bit of insight into herself by telling them with words, why she'd like to ban 'Hate' if she could.
Terri advised me that, "The issue of my tee is BAN HATE!, because hate is the root cause the other things we would all love to see banned things like war, violent crime and abuse. The design of the lotus flower is to signify the positive change that can come from love which, to me, is the antidote to hate. I choose to give the proceeds of this auction to the Maria Fareri Children's hospital because I have witnessed, first hand, the power of the love they can give to the children they treat and the parents who are hurting for their children.
When I asked Terri about her reasoning behind donating to the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, in honor of Tyler Lemieux, she shared her thoughts with me.
"The Maria Fareri Children's Hospital exists because of the dream of a little girl named Maria Ferrari. She dreamed of a beautiful place where sick children like her, could be treated and respected and live a normal life while they recovered." She goes on to say, "Tyler Lemieux was my baby cousin who passed away after 3 short years on this earth. He and his family were taken care of by the amazing staff at Maria Ferrari and the love they received has left an incredible impression in their lives. He is always in my heart and can live through many things such as doing charity for others in honor of him." In hearing this, I admit that I was really touched, and was a little glad that the interview wasn't in person, so that Terri couldn't see the tears forming in my eyes.
The bidding for this auction starts on October 15, 2006. I asked Terri if she planned on encouraging her family and friends to participate in the bidding, on any of the creations from other celebrities, including her t-shirt. She told me, "I would encourage anyone I know to check out all of the different celebrity designed tee-shirts to see for themselves which one they like and what charity they respond to. I will definitely be bidding myself!"
Terri is indeed a lovely woman, and it was a real pleasure to be able to share this interview with her fans! Soaps.com wishes Terri and the other stars much luck in getting those donations in!
"What's the most embarrassing thing you've had to do in a scene?" (Soap Opera Digest - October 2006) Terri Colombino: "I had to strip when Carly was working at the strip club with Nick. I had to pretend to audition to be a stripper and it was just really embarrassing. I was going to try to play it funny and use the pole, but have her fall and stuff, but the pole wasn't attached to anything. So they were like, 'Oh by the way, don't use the pole.' So I just had to dance around like an idiot. It was embarrassing."
Bad Car-ma (Soap Opera Digest - September 2006) What makes Terri Colombino (Katie) see red? "Anything that has to do with driving. I'm a horrible road rage person," she admits. "In fact, Mark [Collier, Mike] just said to me today - because I was supposed to be really angry in a scene - 'Pretend someone just cut you off and get that mad.' Because I take him home often and he sees how mad I really get!"
Random Quotes (Soap Opera Weekly - September 2006) "They'd rather have their dresses on Julia Roberts than Terri Colombino. We get the leftovers, but we usually get some good stuff." - ATWT's TERRI COLOMBINO on finding a designer dress during awards show season
Line Up (CBS Soaps In Depth - August 22, 2006) The night before the CBS Daytime Superstar Weekend began, the actors were given free reign in Paramount's Kings Dominion to go on some rides without any crowds. "We had the park to ourselves," confides Terri Colombino (Katie). And for the rest of the weekend, the stars joined the fans in taking part in all the park had to offer. "We did the whole thing," she smiles. "Me and Alex [Chando, Maddie] got henna tattoos, and we took the "Old Timey" photos... it was a good time." However, one thing the actress was reluctant to take advantage of was the park's offer to cut the stars to the head of the lines on the rides. "I only did it once," Colombino admits, "and I was like, 'I can't do that again, I feel like a jerk!' It was weird. And you know what? It makes the ride not quite as good, because you didn't wait for it!"
Star Talk "When and where were you most happy" (CBS Soaps In Depth - August 22, 2006) Terri Colombino: "I think living on the beach with Kristina (Sisco, ex-Abigail), when I first met [my husband] Artie and we were just falling in love. It was a beautiful summer and we spent the whole summer on the beach. Life was pretty good. Still is, but that was simpler!"
Who was your first celebrity crush? (Soap Opera Weekly - August 22, 2006) Terri Colombino: "Probably Corey Haim. One of my first auditions in L.A. was to co-star with him. I got really close but I lost out to a daughter of a Monkee (Amy Dolenz, ex-Melissa, GH)!"
Up-Close and Personal - Do As I Say... (Soap Opera Digest - August 8, 2006) With a loving husband and a beautiful daughter, AS THE WORLD TURNS' Terri Colombino (Katie) is in the perfect place to give her alter ego some advice on getting her life in similarly good shape. "I would tell her to listen to her heart more and not try to make things happen so much," she muses. "Let fate take its course. Of course, we all have control over what happens in our life, but I believe that there's an underlying plan for each of us." And this is where Colombino feels that Katie Peretti Frasier Coleman Kasnoff has gone wrong. "She tries to make things happen way too much and ends up screwing it up," the actress says with a smile. "She just needs to chill out and let things happen... and maybe get rid of the rabbit." Knowing that Katie's pet hare is a favorite of some fans, Colombino quickly clarifies, "No, I love Snickers. It's just getting a little too cute. She needs to grow up a little bit!"
Soap Opera Style - Do You Fake Bake? (Soap Opera Weekly - August 1, 2006) Terri Colombino: "I just put on that Jergens moisturizer, which is amazing because it's a daily glow. You have to use it for a couple of days for it to take, but the good thing about that is that if you mess up you're not going to tell. It's natural and can gauge how tan you want to look with it."
Which co-star would you call if you needed bail money? (Soap Opera Weekly - July 25, 2006) Paul Leyden (Simon, ATWT) "I'd call Terri (Colombino, Katie) because I think she's got a little fund set aside. She's got Julia's college fund and Paul's bail fund, but I think one's bigger than the other - Julia's still young!"
Remembering Benjamin Hendrickson (Soap Opera Weekly - July 25, 2006) Terri Colombino: "I know this is probably very hard for the fans, especially because they didn't get to know Benjamin personally, yet they feel so close to him. If you really want to see who Benji was, watch his Emmy acceptance speech again. It's warm, humorous and appreciative of the people around him. His presence will be greatly missed."
Take Five (Soap Opera Digest - July 25, 2006)
Terri Colombino (Katie, AS THE WORLD TURNS)
• How do you relax?
• "I sleep. That's the only was I know how to relax. But I have started to do yoga, too, even though it's not always as relaxing as one would think."
• What's your favorite vacation spot?
• "I haven't been on vacation in five years! I'd like to go back to Positano, Italy, which is where I had my honeymoon [the week of September 11, 2001] and it wasn't exactly relaxing at the time. I'd like to go back and redo that."
• What movie role would you like to have played?
• "I'd love to have Keira Knightley's role in Pirates of the Caribbean because you could obviously tell they were having an amazing time, and that way, I'd get to work with Johnny Depp."
• Who is always guaranteed to make you laugh?
• "Paul [Leyden, Simon]."
• What word describes your life right now?
• "Complete."
Backstage Dish (Soap Opera Digest - July 18, 2006)
MOST MATERNAL: Kelly Menighan Hensley (Emily) - "She's always very cognizant of what people are going through in their lives, and really cares. She doesn't just ask you how you are so she can hear you say, 'Fine.'" - Terri Colombino
FUNNIEST: Michael Park (Jack), Martha Byrne (Lily) and Don Hastings (Bob) - "I know people say this all the time, but when you get Martha and Michael together, they keep the crew so happy because they make the time go by really fast. I love doing scenes with them because everything's a joke." - Terri Colombino
BIGGEST PRANKSTERS: Park and Mark Collier (Mike) - "They tie because they mostly do it to each other." - Terri Colombino
MOST STYLISH: Hensley, Jennifer Landon (Gwen), Colleen Zenk Pinter (Barbara) - "I just don't know how Kelly does it. She comes in looking always so put together, while the rest of us wear our PJs to work." - Terri Colombino
BIGGEST GOSSIPS: Makeup Department - "That would be me [laughs]. No, I don't think it's one specific person, but when you get in the hair and makeup room, it's contagious." - Terri Colombino
Home Again (CBS Soaps In Depth - July 11, 2006) Returning to ATWT, Paul Leyden (Simon) was excited to reunite with his old castmates, but particularly Terri Colombino (Katie). "Terri and her husband, Artie, are easily two of my best friends," he confesses. "All my family is back in Australia. I don't have any family in America apart from my very good friends. So Terri and Artie, and a lot of my other friends on the soap and in New York, are like my family." It was a feeling that the actor couldn't quite find during his time in Hollywood. "I have a lot of good friends in Los Angeles," Leyden admits. "But none of those friends cross over into that feeling of having family, whereas back in New York, I do. I have an instant family. You miss that support. It's those people who get you without having to explain."
All-Star Scrapbook (CBS Soaps In Depth - July 11, 2006) Back in 2002, AS THE WORLD TURNS' Katie had a hit video called Katie's Butt-Busting Workout, and fiction crossed over into reality that spring when New York Sports Clubs created an exercise class inspired by the fictional fitness diva. Terri Colombino (Katie) was joined by some of her castmates for a lower-body workout that promised to kick their tails!
Colombino admitted that she's not a gym instructor, she just played one on TV! "I think a lot of the employees at NYSC watch the show," she laughed, "and they thought 'Well, why don't we give this poor girl some help and teach her how to do aerobics for real!'"
What storyline do you wish your show would write for your character? (Soap Opera Weekly - July 11, 2006) Terri: "I'd love to do a social-issue storyline. We had a brief one with Margo's liver transplant story a few years ago, but I'd love to do a more involved one over a longer period of time."
Bronzed Beauties (CBS Soaps In Depth - July 11, 2006) There's nothing like brightening up your skin with a bronze glow for those sexy summer nights. And in today's health-conscious society, achieving the look without actually using the sun is an added bonus. "Bronzing powder makes you look tan without having to tan. So I'm going to use that instead of tanning at the tanning booth," stresses Terri Colombino (Katie, AS THE WORLD TURNS).
Hottest Newcomers 2006 (Soap Opera Digest - July 4, 2006) Alexandra Chando (Maddie). Terri Colombino: "Yes, she is the hottest newcomer! Alex fit in perfectly from day one. She's such a beautiful, special person. You can tell when you see her onscreen, but to know her and have her sunshine around all day is really nice. I can't say enough good things about her; I absolutely love her."
Round up - What was the first line you spoke on your show? (Soap Opera Digest - July 4, 2006) Terri Colombino: "It was something like. 'Margo [Ellen Dolan], close the blinds - he's after me!' Because that mysterious person was chasing her. I don't want to ever look back at that episode. It was my first day; it was awful."
Terri Colombino: Seeing Red (Carpet) (soapoperadigest.com - June 2006) Terri Colombino (Katie, AS THE WORLD TURNS) knows what it takes to look good on the red carpet, so she invited fans to take a peek at how she worked with designer David Rodriguez and stylist Felix Mercado on dressing for the Daytime Emmys.
"A lot of big-name designers are not rushing to dress daytime people, so it's hard for daytime actresses to get those fabulous couture gowns that they have on the Oscars and prime-time Emmys," reveals Colombino. "I talked to David and Felix about that, and they thought it was ridiculous. The people are just as talented and just as beautiful. They may not get seen quite as much, but they do get seen. So he was excited to dress me, and his dresses were amazing."
Colombino did her homework before meeting with Rodriguez and Mercado. "I looked at his stuff online, and the [dress] I ended up wearing [to the Daytime Emmys] was my favorite," she smiles. "His designs fit so well for a woman's body. I am more hourglass-shaped than some actresses. He works that and makes you proud of that and proud to show that. Felix was great, too. It was the first time I talked to a stylist about creating a look - especially on the red carpet - and stepping it up a bit."
Colombino chose the multi-colored sequin dress. "I loved the way it fit," she raves. "They didn't have to do anything to it except take up the bottom, because Amazon women wear them on the runway, and I'm only 5'3"!"
The white dress Colombino wore to the SOAPnet pre-Emmy party was her favorite. "It was just hanging there, and I said, 'Let's try it on,'" she explains. "I love the back - that's stingray. It was a smash hit. I got more compliments on that dress than I ever have in my life." Colombino was pleased with Rodriguez's dresses. "David's stuff doesn't all look the same, but has the same flavor to it," she says. "You can tell it's his, but you don't go, 'Oh, that looks like what she wore the day before.' Look how different the white dress and the one I wore to the Emmys were, yet they both have the same form-fitting style and a little ass in there, which is good. Both were well-made and beautiful. I felt very honored to wear his designs, because I've been a fan of his for a long time."
Colombino did nix a feathered gown. "I looked like Big Bird in that," she exclaims. "There was a greenish-maroon dress too, but that felt more autumn-like to me."
When it comes to choosing a dress to wear to a big event, Colombino stresses, "It doesn't have to be a famous designer, it's just how you feel in it. I always say, 'Go classy and classic,' because it always works. When people go crazy with these outfits it's always to get attention, and maybe that's a good thing every once in a while, but you're going to look back on the picture and go, 'What was I thinking?'
"Also, take pictures. We all have digital cameras now. Take a picture if you're not sure and then compare it. I loved a pink purse with the Emmy dress, but we took a picture with that and then a brown purse. The pink popped too much, so I went with the brown."
Although Colombino went down to the wire in picking out a dress, she didn't freak out. "I don't really get all that stressed about it," she shrugs. "It's a fun opportunity to dress up and get to wear beautiful things. It's not like it's my wedding or anything. That's when I would get stressed (laughs)! The thing I do stress about is posing. You don't want to look like you're posing, but you are. You have to make it look like everything is in the right place. I'm not comfortable with that, but I'm getting there."
On The Town - Worldly Ways (CBS Soaps In Depth - June 27, 2006) Terri Colombino (Katie) and Oakdale matriarch Helen Wagner (Nancy) signed copies of Katie's tell-all, Oakdale Confidential, at a Westbury, NY Borders Books. "It was a huge success," Colombino says.
Cruise Control (Soap Opera Weekly - June 20, 2006) Paul Leyden sails back into ATWT this week
Weekly: How did this return come about?
Paul Leyden: I came back to New York last December and I was hanging out with Terri (Colombino, Katie), saying how L.A. makes me miserable. The work out there was good and I was getting down to the final wire on some stuff, but it's such a different city and culture from New York. I loved it here so much. Terri told Chris (Goutman, executive producer), "I don't think Paul is very happy out there." Chris started calling me. Then I had one of those extremely busy yet unfulfilling pilot seasons, so the timing was good. I'm from Australia, so obviously this isn't my home, but [New York has] become my home in America. If I'm not going to live in Australia, I may as well live in New York.
Weekly: What's it like working with Terri again?
Leyden: Terri is such a great friend. We keep in contact, so when we see each other, it's not that overwhelming feeling of Katie seeing Simon. With Terri and me it's like, "Hey, I just spoke to you two days ago." We're trying to take that familiarity out of our relationship and put shock into the Katie and Simon relationship. I adore Terri, she's one of my best friends. Just walking into the studio and seeing her face makes me light up.
Weekly: What do you think of the popularity of Simon and Katie?
Leyden: It's totally gratifying. It takes me back to the times on the show where I couldn't wait to get those scripts. When Katie and Simon were first coming together, being locked in the basement of an opera house in Malta, they had such a great connection. They would write these wild and wacky fantasy sequences and things that we didn't shy away from because we had fun doing them. That was the least amount of work I ever had to do as an actor because Terri does it all for you. All you have to do is be in the scene and look at her and listen and you'll be the best actor you can be.
Soap Opera Style - How Do You Get Ready For Summer, Beauty-Wise? (Soap Opera Weekly - June 20, 2006) Terri: "I go through stages. Right before the Emmys I was in a gung-ho stage of working out and eating perfectly so I could fit into that dress. Since I did so much in a short amount of time, I have been rebelling and eating everything in sight. That's my struggle. I would be very happy with myself if I weren't on TV but as we know, the camera adds five to 10 pounds so I usually want to lose five to 10 pounds. I got these great Michael Kors sandals. They are the most comfortable sandals I've ever had and although they are a little bit expensive they go with everything and I wear them every day."
Star Talk "What's the most mischievous thing you've ever done in your youth?" (CBS Soaps In Depth - June 13, 2006) Terri Colombino "Well, I got in trouble in kindergarten for showing my Underoos to the boys. If that's any indication of what was to come! [laughs] But I mean, how could you not? They made these cool things where you're like, 'Look at me, I've got Wonder Woman!'"
Golden Fan-niversary (CBS Soaps In Depth - June 13, 2006) When she and co-star Mark Collier (Mike) weren't signing photos, Terri Colombino (Katie) found herself autographing copies of the novel scripted by her on-screen alter ego. "I feel like a little bit of a fraud signing a book I didn't write," she laughed, "but that's okay!"
The Glamorous Life (CBS Soaps In Depth - May 30, 2006) The Glamourous Life
As one of AS THE WORLD TURNS' most popular couples, Katie and Mike have had their share of ups and downs, and portrayers Terri Colombino and Mark Collier continue to enjoy the wild ride. Here, they review their characters' dramatic past and predict their potential future... all while struggling to keep a straight face!
MAKING AN IMPRESSION
Soaps in Depth: What is it about the pairing of Mike and Katie that you think clicked with fans?
Terri Colombino: The amount of nakedness? (Laughs)
Mark Collier: Maybe. I think that they both brought out different sides of each other. Mike was serious and so straight-laced, and I feel like Katie really allowed him to have a little bit more fun. And I think that Katie...
Colombino: Needed to settle down! (Laughs)
Collier:... needed to maybe try to see things a little bit more seriously and maturely.
Colombino: You should bring out the best in someone you're with. They do that for each other, which is why I think it was so accepted right off the bat.
Collier: And it wasn't one of those "We're going to throw these two people together and you're going to like them" things. They put us together through a friendship...
Colombino: So you saw the flirtation develop.
In Depth: Do you feel as though you lost some fans after what Mike and Katie did to Jen and Henry?
Colombino: Oh, hell yeah. And you know, it's [not right] how they can't forgive us for that, but they can forgive Jen.
Collier: Right, For sleeping with your brother, [Craig].
Colombino: I had Mike first... They should be mad at her for taking him from me in the first place! (Laughs) No, I understand why the fans were upset, because Jen and Mike had developed a nice relationship, and of course, Henry and Katie had, too. It kind of tainted the relationship.
Collier: People really like Jen, and people love Henry. Seeing Henry hurt, you're going to have some people go against you.
Colombino: Yep.
GETTING COMFORTABLE
In Depth: What are the advantages of working so closely together?
Colombino: I think you get to know really well the personality of the other person and what they're going to bring to that specific scene. So you can know you're going to be on the same page, and you can trust them.
Collier: I think it becomes a level of comfort in a way. Not where it makes it routine, but where you can trust the other person. I look back on when we first started working together, and there was all this chemistry, but there wasn't this ease. Now I feel like there's an ease.
LOOKING AHEAD
In Depth: What would you like to see next for Mike and Katie?
Collier: Personally? I always wanted to see Mike kind of revert, in a way. Like maybe Katie did something, and Mike just finally loses it from being this nice guy all the time and goes back to that whole rebel he used to be.
Colombino: Just a little more flawed.
Collier: Yeah. I think that would be fun for me.
Colombino: And see how Katie deals with it. That would be fun for me, too.
Collier: Or what if Katie couldn't have children, which is incredibly important to Mike.
Colombino: Right. Oh, yeah, that's a good one!
Collier: Thank you. How would he handle that?
Colombino: Yeah. And how would she handle it? That would be good. Something like that. To make them grow up a little bit. Especially Katie!
YOU TAKE THE GOOD
In Depth: What is each other's best quality?
Colombino: You're always positive. You always find the best in people and situations. You're just a loving, good person to be around. And you're very talented.
Collier: Thank you.
Colombino: You're welcome.
Collier: Terri is the same way. Seeing her smiling every day... I like knowing I'm going to come to work and Terri's going to be laughing, goofing off and having fun.
YOU TAKE THE BAD
In Depth: What is each other's worst habit?
Colombino: You don't eat vegetables; that's annoying.
Collier: She eats boiled eggs in the morning! You might as well spray sulfur at everybody.
Colombino: Everybody at the studio does. I'm sorry that I'm not one like you that can eat cheeseburgers all day long and look like that. That's his most annoying habit.
Star Talk "Which other celebrity do people mistake you for?" (CBS Soaps In Depth - May 30, 2006) Terri Colombino "Well, when my hair's really curly and I have a lot of makeup on, sometimes people say I look like Jessica Simpson, but I don't think I do at all. Although when BLUE CRUSH was out, people said that they thought that was me on the poster as Kate Bosworth. They were like. 'Oh, you did a surfing movie?' Which was kind of a compliment, too."
33rd Annual Daytime Emmys - psst! did you hear? (CBS Soaps In Depth - May 30, 2006) Terri Colombino applauded body diversity, saying, "We don't all have to be stick-thin, right?"
33rd Annual Daytime Emmys - Best Dressed (CBS Soaps In Depth - May 30, 2006) "It"s a mermaid dress!" laughed Terri Colombino of this gown by her fave designer, David Rodriguez.
Roundup "Who do you think looked the best at the Emmys" (Soap Opera Digest - May 23, 2006) Terri Colombino "I thought all the GUIDING LIGHT girls looked beautiful. Michelle Ray Smith looked fantastic in that brown and white dress with the flowers."
Emmy Timeline (Soap Opera Weekly - May 23, 2006) 3:30 ATWT's Terri Colombino and Jennifer Ferrin (Katie and Jennifer) join Jordan Woolley, Michael Park, Zach Roerig, Alexandra Chando and Grayson McCouch in Jordan's hotel room and they wrap up the night by rocking out to Bon Jovi.
Doing The Bump (Soap Opera Digest - May 16, 2006) Scads of soap stars have divulged just how awkward it is to shoot a love scene. Add a pregnant actress to the mix and there's the potential for some really red-faced moments.
When she was expecting, Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT) got something she didn't expect. "I have an infamous sex scene that was filmed while being pregnant," recounts the actress. That would be Katie and Mike's steamy-in-more-ways-than-one shower escapades. "I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more had I not been pregnant," she says. "In fact, I didn't enjoy it at all because I was quite sick at the time. It's really hard to be in front of 50 crew members and your castmates, practically completely naked, in a shower, three months pregnant, ready to puke... I think I literally ran off set when it was done and threw up."
During that notorious ATWT shower scene, Mark Collier [Mike] had Colombino's back - by exposing a lot more of his own. She notes, "I wasn't really showing that much, but I definitely wasn't my most fit and trim, so they focused more on him." There was an added benefit. "I wasn't as nervous as I normally would be," Colombino reflects. "Because I was like, 'Uh, I have an excuse. I don't have to worry about not eating for two weeks before that. I'm pregnant and people know it, so let him be the sex object."
Who, Where and Wow! (Soap Opera Weekly - May 16, 2006) Terri Colombino (Katie) welcomed newcomer Spencer Grammer (Lucy). Elena Goode (Jade) and Alexandra Chando (Maddie) to their first fan club gathering. "We've been doing all these great 50th anniversary parties and celebrations, but this one is the most special because we get to share it with the fans," cheered Colombino.
Soap Opera Style "What clothing can you not live without?" (Soap Opera Weekly - May 16, 2006) Terri Colombino "Jeans are always a staple - whatever fits that day."
Snap! Snap! (Soap Opera Weekly - May 16, 2006) ATWT's Terri Colombino (Katie) with co-presenter Jennifer Landon (Gwen), used the train of her gown as a shawl. "I'm freezing!" she explained, before changing clothes for the afterparty, where she caught up with Gina Tognoni (Dinah, GL).
Actress Terri Colombino's Emmy Fashion Expedition (FOX News Online - May 12, 2006)
by Celebrity Stylist Felix Mercado for iMag
They're equally talented, attractive and successful, so why the divide between daytime TV and primetime TV actors? That's my question of the day. It's no secret primetime TV actors have entree to the best fashion and accessories, are sought after by paparazzi, and can be seen on hit lifestyle shows like "Entertainment Tonight," "Extra," "Access Hollywood," and others. Could the networks be to blame? Advertisers? Fans? I ponder the thought! In any event, I believe all actors are created equal. Ok, not all of them; just the ones I choose to work with. Which brings me to my story:
Thanks to a call from my dear friend Kenneth Teaton of Foxboro Entertainment, Emmy-nominated actress Terri Colombino, who plays Katie Peretti on the CBS daytime drama "As The World Turns," got a taste of the royal fashion treatment most high-profile celebrities are accustomed to. "She's gorgeous, the paparazzi love her, and I want you to dress her for the Daytime Emmys in L.A.," were Teaton's words. After a brief glance at my calendar, I replied, "Sure, I can squeeze her in." But with only two weeks before the big event and having not worked with the daytime darling before, I had my work cut out for me. So I put the pedal to the metal and started with the two Rs: research and my Rolodex. After confirming Terri's sizes, I quickly began to scour the online celebrity photo websites (Wire Image, Getty Images, Film Magic) to see what Colombino currently looked like, who she's worn and what can be improved Felix-style. Then I opened my trusty Rolodex and began calling those who I thought were perfect for what I was envisioning.
In just a few hours, I confirmed my good friend and famed fashion designer David Rodriguez for evening gowns, Judith Ripka for sparkly gems, Stuart Weitzman and Kate Spade for shoes and Jacqueline at Tracy Paul, who was ready to ship evening bags of my choice by deadline. Now, all I had to do was find Terri a "va-va-voom" dress, jewelry and hairstyle fit for the princess of daytime TV. But between her busy shoot schedule and mine, trying to lock down a date to meet would be near impossible.
Just as I was about to take a break my Blackberry rang, and it was Teaton again. "Celebrity red-carpet photographer Su Coflin of Max Photos, wants an exclusive to shoot Terri's pre-Emmy wardrobe try-on and fit session." "It's a deal!" I belted out. After a few more calls between my contacts and Teaton, a photo and fitting date was set with Rodriguez himself at his showroom! My work had barely begun...
It's fitting day! After trying on over half a dozen gowns by David Rodriguez, we found the "va-va-voom" dress. It was a perfect fit! The dress spoke sex appeal, elegance, glamour and left us all speechless at the same time. Colombino was thrilled. "This is going to be so great! I can't tell you how excited I am to rock that hot dress!"
The fitting went so well, we even found her a fabulous cocktail dress with a stingray accent on the back, also by Rodriguez, along with jewelry by Grafite Chic, for the Pre-Emmy party.
Next step: Jewelry! Jessica Stark, PR Director at Judith Ripka, sent over more than $100k worth of diamond jewelry for us to choose from. The bling was so fabulous I had to put on my Dior shades to soften the bright sparkle from the spectacular jewels. But after much debate, we chose the best of the bunch. Colombino loved the medium cuff and the all diamond cuff, as well as the cocktail ring, the smaller necklace, but agreed (with me) that some great earrings could be better.
After finding our dress and selecting the jewelry, we moved on to shoes and clutches. With quite a few choices from Stuart Weitzman, Kate Spade, Inge Christopher and Whiting & Davis we had to make some cuts.
After some deliberation, we agreed the Kate Spade evening shoes in bittersweet chocolate satin coupled with the stylish Whiting & Davis minaudiere clutch in bronze was a picture-perfect match. "I just can't thank you enough, you have gotten me all excited about dressing-up again!" said Colombino.
And now for the big reveal. Here is Terri Colombino on the red carpet at the Daytime Emmys in a one-of-a-kind mermaid-style gown by David Rodriguez, diamond chandelier earrings, diamond cuff and diamond cocktail ring (all by Judith Ripka), clutch by Whiting & Davis, and shoes by Kate Spade. The sexy stunner sent photographers into a photo frenzy! "Lots of camera flashes, and tails were a-waggin'!" said Colombino. Her date for the evening was Paul Leyden, who plays Simon Frasier on the "As The World Turns."
Like Tom Cruise in M: I-3, my mission was accomplished! (And yes, that was Terri and me you saw on the red carpet at the New York City premiere of Mission: Impossible 3!)
Ins & Outs (CBS Soaps In Depth - May 2, 2006) IN: It's official! Paul Leyden will reprise his role as Katie's first love, Simon, on AS THE WORLD TURNS. Now, Terri Colombino reveals how she got her Australian pal to return to Oakdale.
As set-siders report that the actor was due to begin taping scenes at the end of the month, a rep for ATWT confirmed at press time that Leyden is indeed returning to the soap. However, no other details were available. Having originated the role in 2000, Leyden departed Oakdale after three years but briefly reprised his part in 2004. Still, that return wasn't enough for his good friend, Colombino, who played a strong role in ATWT's quest to bring the hunk back to the canvas for a love triangle involving Katie, Simon and Mike. "I have been pushing him for it to happen for the past two years," she says with a laugh. "As you can imagine! It's just been a matter of if he's ready for it. I mean, he's loved our show and everybody there from the fist day he was on it. So it wasn't a matter of that." What does Colombino believe it was that made Leyden give in to her finessing? "I think he's missing New York a lot," she muses. "So that was one of my persuasive [arguments]!"
Neil Patrick Harris Is One Cool Mother (TVGuide.com - April 24, 2006)
TVGuide.com: When I interviewed As the World Turns' Terri Colombino nee Conn years ago, she mentioned that you were her prom date. What do you remember about that night?
Neil Patrick Harris: She's married now? Oh, I remember lots. That was really fun. We had a very good time.
TVGuide.com: Just how big and poofy was her dress?
Harris: [Laughs] I don't think it was a giant fluffy dress. It was 1991, so it wasn't cheesy '80s [fashion].
"Who on your cast would most likely adopt a stray dog?" (CBS Soaps In Depth - April 18, 2006)
Marie Wilson (Meg, ATWT): "You know who would? Terri Colombino (Katie). I just see her taking in all the stray animals out there. She's such a sweet person. I can picture her going, 'Oh, let's take him home!'"
Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT): "Well, if it was a cat, I would say Ellen Dolan (Margo), but I don't know about a dog. I'm gonna say Jen Landon (Gwen). She seems like a major humanitarian... well... dogitarian."
Revolving Door (Soap Opera Weekly - April 11, 2006) RETURNING Watch out Mike! On the heels of Paolo Seganti's (Damian) return to AS THE WORLD TURNS comes word that another fan favorite, Paul Leyden (Simon), is this close to inking a new deal. "I've been planting the seed with Paul to come back to New York for the summer, and he's finally thinking about it, so let's all cross our fingers," confides Terri Colombino (Katie). "It would make my world turn to have Paul back and revisit the old Simon." Leyden played the role from 2000-'03 with a brief return in 2004. If it all works out, look for Simon to return just in time for May Sweeps.
SOAPnet Interview with Terri Colombino (SOAPnet.com - April 2006)
From the set of Soap Talk's salute to ATWT's 50th Anniversary
(Terri Colombino, ATWT)
As the World Turns' Katie Peretti has had more romantic ups and downs than most young soap opera heroines, but her portrayer, Terri Colombino has a much calmer life and I recently got the chance to talk to her after Soap Talk's salute to ATWT's 50th anniversary.
Kat: Can you believe As the World Turns has been on for fifty years?
Terri: I can't believe it. I can't even think of a primetime show that's been on for that long. They can't even do fifty episodes half the time.
Kat: You must be so proud to be a part of history like this.
Terri: Oh yeah, it's so emotional. Going through all of these celebrations for the anniversary has made me end up crying most of the time. Listening to people's stories, hearing all that they've gone through on this show, the family that we have, you don't think about it on a day to day basis. You go to work, you do your thing, you think, that was cool but then you go home to your real family. Then you do something like this where what you're a part of really gets put into perspective and I am so totally thankful and blessed that I'm a part of something this big.
Kat: You've been on the show for...
Terri: I'm in my eighth year so about seven and a half years.
Kat: That is a long time!
Terri: It is a long time. Who's on a primetime show for that long? It's rare. And I get to play a character who has so evolved. When Katie first came on she was completely different. I don't know what she was! In fact, I don't know what she is right now, either. I kind of lost her a little bit. But she's coming back.
Kat: It has been an interesting evolution, though. She went from a bratty, selfish young girl to a fully realized woman.
Terri: I think Simon changed her and brought out the person that was underneath all the scheming. Though she is getting a little "schemy" again because she's a little insecure again. We all go through that though so what can you do?
Kat: Is it interesting for you to play that part of her?
Terri: Yeah, I love it. It's hard because as an outsider looking in you think, come on, Katie, don't be so insecure. You've got a lot going for you. But when you're the person going through all that behavior you don't realize those things so I have to play it that way.
Kat: Do you think that her relationship with Mike is more real now?
Terri: Oh, yeah. It's finally gotten to a point that there is no insecurity in terms of their relationship. She just has her own personal insecurities. With him, she finally feels like, this is it, we found each other again and it's a nice time.
Kat: And what happened to her gym?
Terri: Oh, I'm still working there. (laughing) I was actually asking that question the other day. I was dressed in clothes like I was going to the office and was like, where am I going? Either Katie goes to the gym or I'm filming a workout tape so why am I dressed like this? They just don't talk about it. There's not a lot of work going on in Oakdale at the moment, it's all about the personal relationships.
Kat: Though I did just read about Katie doing some, um, "work" with Nick at the Galaxy club.
Terri: Oh, right. Katie had to do a little stripping.
Kat: I wondered how you felt about that.
Terri: It was actually kind of fun. I had a pole and everything. Unfortunately, the pole wasn't very sturdy and we couldn't use it, which was too bad because I had this idea of her using it and getting into it and then just falling.
Kat: Which would be a totally Katie move. When I read about it I thought, oh, maybe they'll have Katie teach cardio stripping at the gym.
Terri: Great idea! And there we have the sexy part of the show.
Kat: If you could write a fantasy storyline for Katie, what would it be?
Terri: There always has to be some conflict so I would love for Simon to come back. I always felt kind of weird how they brought him back the last time. They changed his character to make the story work and it bothered me because it took away from the magic that Katie and Simon had. If I could go back I would have wanted to have Katie and Mike take more time to fall in love so that when Simon did come back, it was more of a struggle for her and Simon wouldn't have had to be such a jerk. So, I would love for him to come back to smooth things out, then have her marry Mike but still have that part of her that loves Simon. It would be great to see them trying to have some sort of relationship or friendship and seeing what comes out of that.
Kat: It would be more organic. I know a lot of fans were disappointed with his last return. Not because of him but because of story.
Terri: We all were disappointed. It's not anyone's fault, they're just trying to tell a story. If they told the story a certain way, then the fans would have wanted Katie with Simon and we didn't have Paul fully back so it would have been difficult. I understand that part of it but I would like to revisit that relationship. Mike and Simon are so different and they appeal to different parts of Katie so it would be nice to see her struggle with what version of Katie she wants to be. Who brings out the best in her and who does she bring out the best in? That would be fun.
Kat: A lot of the fans wonder what happened to Katie's mother. Where's Lyla?
Terri: I know! I was actually thinking they should try and bring her back for the fan club luncheon to celebrate the anniversary. Anne is great. She's a singer on cruise ships so she's always traveling. It would be great if she came back. I also really miss interacting with Margo. Sometimes Katie gets annoying when she's meddling in people's business and her family keeps her grounded. So she can say to them, this is the reason I'm behaving this way and then it's almost like therapy for her. It might make more sense to the audience and make them feel for her instead of them saying, what is she doing?
Kat: When Maddie first came on I thought she was like a younger Katie.
Terri: I know! She's a little sweetie. I saw those fantasy scenes she was having and I was like, hey, that's my story!
Kat: It would be cute if they became better friends like Katie is with Henry and Katie kind of mentored her.
Terri: That would be great. My other dream storyline was to have Henry fall in love so that he and Katie could get their friendship back on track. I think if he fell in love and someone loved him then the audience would forgive Katie for breaking his heart and that whole debacle of their marriage. Then we could be friends and partners in crime again.
50 "First" Dates (Soap Opera Digest - April 4, 2006) September 10, 1998: "The night they said I didn't get Georgia [a part that went to Jaime Dudney], they also said, 'But they want to write a character for you.' And I thought, 'Right - they're just saying that to make me feel better.' But they called back a week later and asked if I wanted it." - Terri Colombino (Katie)
Memory Lane (CBS Soaps In Depth - April 4, 2006) Terri Colombino (Katie)
What has been your favorite storyline?
Terri: Well, I had the privilege of watching the tapes of when Margo pulled the plug on Casey, Katie's dad, for my backstory. And it was really, really good. I was bawling. And I'm sure the audience was, too.
Were there any storylines you wish had gone on longer?
Terri: The liver storyline with Margo. Because in the same vein as the other story with her and Casey, it's more of an issue-based human story. A lot of people go through it, and I got a lot of mail, and I just wish that it would've gone on longer, because people who do go through that go through it for a long time. And now we're drinking beer, and we probably shouldn't be. (Laughs)
Which former co-star do you miss the most?
Terri: Paul Leyden (ex-Simon). I mean, obviously. We're still the best of friends, and I miss having him here. But I'm proud of him, and he's doing well... It's just, I'm selfish, and I wish he was here!
What do you remember about your audition?
Terri: Well, I remember that I auditioned for Georgia, which was a totally different role. And walking down the street after my test, never having spent any time in New York, I walked right by Matt Dillon. And I was like "Oh my God! I love New York! I want to move here so bad!"
An Honor To Be Nominated (CBS Soaps In Depth - April 4, 2006) "This could definitely be Trent's year," says Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT) of co-star and Daytime Emmy nominee Trent Dawson (Henry). Colombino announced the contenders for Outstanding Younger Actor with Dicopoulos during live Emmy nominations on THE VIEW in New York. Later, the two fielded questions with the other soap stars on hand. On the West Coast, B&B executive producer Bradley Bell hugged Outstanding Lead Actress nominee Susan Flannery (Stephanie) during a nomination celebration.
50 Years of Turning (Soap Opera Digest and Weekly Online - March 2006) Terri Colombino (Katie): To be a part of something that has been around this long is pretty amazing. I do scenes with the woman who said the first words on the show [Helen Wagner, Nancy], who is still here. That is a big privilege. We come in to work and do our thing, but when you think about it, it's amazing and I'm very proud.
Net Worth - Favorite sites? (Soap Opera Weekly - March 21, 2006) Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT) "Z Gallerie (www.zgallerie.com) has nice home items, especially for housewarming gifts. It's beautiful stuff and pretty inexpensive."
Star Talk "Who on your cast would do the best on THE APPRENTICE?" (CBS Soaps In Depth - March 21, 2006) Grayson McCouch (Dusty, ATWT) "I think Terri Colombino (Katie), because she's a consummate optimist. She's got that Midwestern glow, that optimism that wins anybody over."
CBS News - Supporting Superstars (CBS Soaps In Depth - March 7, 2006) Although presenter Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT) wasn't nominated herself, she was literally trembling with excitement for her colleagues that were - and the show, a best drama contender. "It's our 50th anniversary, so it had to happen! I'm shaking!"
With This Ring... (CBS Soaps In Depth - March 7, 2006) Although actors may be married in real life, you'll rarely ever see them wearing their own wedding rings on screen, as Terri Colombino (Katie) will attest. "They don't like you to wear your own rings," she explains, "because if they need doubles for something, or if you do happen to forget to wear them to work or something, then there's nothing for you to wear." Also, while it may be more convenient for an actor to wear the ring given to them by their spouse, their alter egos usually have more than one. "I mean, look at how many husbands people go through," Colombino chuckles. "It can't be the same ring." Then she pauses and adds, "I think there are a few people that do. I think Maura [West, Carly] does. Because with her, it can be the same ring, since Jack and Carly will always be together!"
Beauty Secrets "What's In Your Makeup Bag?" (CBS Soaps In Depth - March 7, 2006) Have you ever wondered what assortment of beauty products your favorite soap stars can't live without and always have in their possession? Well, wonder no more! Soaps In Depth poses exactly that same question to one of daytime's beautiful women, AS THE WORLD TURNS' Terri Colombino (Katie). "The only things I ever have are mascara, lip gloss and lip liners in my purse. I don't really carry around a lot of make-up," she says.
MAC Lip Liner in Dervish: "This is great. They use it at work; it works with every color."
Max Factor 2,000 Calorie Mascara: "It's the absolute best in my opinion. People always ask if you could have one piece of makeup, what would you have, and mine would be mascara, because I have really light eyelashes and it makes my eyes look really small if I don't wear mascara."
Wet-n-Wild MegaBrilliance Lip Gloss: "It's the really cheap drugstore brand. It's a peachy lip gloss that I've worn since high school - no, since probably seventh grade! It's the same color, and they still have it, and the smell totally reminds me of about seventh grade when you first carry lipstick with you all the time. It's just a really pretty color. It's really light- that '60s kind of look which is good for summer. Kind of beachy."
You Heard It Here (Soap Opera Digest - March 7, 2006) Chances are, if you've read a funny, insightful or inspirational quote from a daytime actor, you saw it here first.
THE TRUTH HURTS
"I've never poisoned anyone... I've wanted to, though." - Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT), on playing bad versus being bad, 11/14/00
Six Degrees of Oscar (The Albuquerque Tribune Online - March 3, 2006) We're talking the New Mexico version of the fame game, which connects us to the big night via balloons, ancient sites, The Trib and, oh, Terri Colombino
78TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS
Airs at 6 p.m. Sunday on KOAT-Channel 7.
At the 1979 Academy Awards, John Wayne said: "Oscar and I have something in common. . . . We're both a little weather-beaten, but we're still here."
The same could be said for New Mexico. With this drought, we're more than a little weather-beaten, and by the look of the West Side, we're definitely still here.
As far as having something in common with Oscar, after a little mindless digging, The Tribune discovered we're more related than we thought.
You might have heard of the pop culture game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, where you can take any actor in Hollywood and connect him or her with the scraggly haired "Footloose" phenomenon in six steps or less.
Well, this is Six Degrees of Oscar - New Mexico style. Who knew the golden statuette could be so closely related to such New Mexico staples as the balloons, the Bears and The Tribune newsroom?
This way, on Sunday, as you're watching the Academy Awards, you can say, 'Me and Joaquin? We're like family,' and wipe away a tear of pride.
LA CUEVA TO 'CRASH'
1. La Cueva High School: The Northeast Heights school, home of the Bears, is alma mater to Emmy-nominated daytime soap opera actress Terri Colombino.
2. Terri Colombino: Growing up in Albuquerque, the 31-year-old actress, who went to middle school at Eisenhower, went by the last name of Conn. But "As the World Turns" fans probably know her as the ornery Katie Peretti Frasier, who was at one point married to Simon, played by Paul Leyden.
3. Paul Leyden: After his "ATWT" stint, he landed on NBC's now-defunct "LAX," co-starring Blair Underwood.
4. Blair Underwood: Underwood is starring in the 2006 feature film "Something New," in which he has an affair with a successful corporate lawyer, played by Sanaa Lathan.
5. Sanaa Lathan: Starred in 1999's "The Best Man," which co-starred Terrence Howard.
6. Terrence Howard: Is nominated for best actor this year for his performance in "Hustle & Flow" and stars in "Crash," nominated for best film.
Which Emmy nomination were you most pleased about? (Soap Opera Weekly - February 28, 2006) Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT): My Trent Dawson (Henry). Of course I'm so happy for Jen Landon (Gwen), Jen Ferrin (Jennifer) and everyone else [from ATWT] who got nominations. But Trent is a long time coming. He wasn't contract for so long, but he does things that nobody else can do. I truly hope that he wins.
The Blush Of New Love (CBS Soaps In Depth - February 21, 2006) Married for more than five years, Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT) still looks back fondly on her courtship with husband Arthur, especially one of their most romantic evenings early in their relationship. "We were just dating, and I lived out on the beach," she recalls. "He came over and made me dinner one night. We went out on the beach and hung out and had wine." But it wasn't just the setting that filled the night with magic, it was the company. "We just talked and talked and talked," Colombino smiles. "It was just that excitement of getting to know someone and hearing that they think the same way you do about things. That was really romantic." Then she laughs and adds, "And realizing that he could cook amazingly well - that was a plus!"
Caption: The way to Colombino's heart, her husband learned early in their relationship, is through her tummy!
Recommended List (Soap Opera Digest - February 21, 2006) TUNE INTO: For Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT), must-see TV is ... "I make sure to tune in to THE BIGGEST LOSER. It's so good. When you see the finale, it's amazing what these people do. And I like it because you actually see them doing the work, unlike THE SWAN, where they just go in for surgery. And [the contestants are] good people; they want to help each other. To see people go through such a change is amazing. That's why people love reality TV. I'm an actor; I'm supposed to hate it, but it's interesting to see people go through those struggles and come out victorious."
Soap News (TV Guide Online - February 2006) As The World Turns star Terri Colombino was tickled to see CBS' nomination landslide. "I'm so happy for GL . My sister show!" she grinned. As for ATWT 's multiple acting nods, Colombino enthused: "[Trent Dawson, Henry] is my partner in crime, so obviously that's my first priority. But I'm so happy for Jennifer Ferrin (Jennifer), who has put in so much this year, and Jennifer Landon (Gwen), who's just a natural, and Jesse [Lee Soffer Will].... Their love story makes me all excited about [our] show again!"

Sing Along (Soap Opera Digest - February 14, 2006)
THE OTHER HALF
Fans of AS THE WORLD TURNS probably recognize Arthur "Artie" Colombino - not just because his wife, Terri, plays Katie, but because he's worked with Michael Park (Jack) and Martha Byrne (Lily) on music projects. But there's a whole different set of fans who know Colombino from years he's spent performing regularly in clubs across the country, but especially New York City area, where he continues to appear about once a month.
His latest CD release, After Sunset, represents the years before marriage and baby Julia changed his life. "I've had a lot of relationships that meant something special to me," says Colombino. "They all taught me to be the person I am today. I grew over the last 10 years. You learn from the mistakes you make - and I've made tons of them - but all of those mistakes led me to my wife and baby. That's why the album is special because it's really the 'old' me and it's pretty great because I've been writing about 'now' ".
Colombino, whose influences run the gamut from U2 to Earth, Wind & Fire, wrote and produced the CD himself and even played most of the instruments, with some back-up from drummer Mike Medora. "Besides being a good guy, he's a very good drummer and he helps me on the computer a lot. I used to run back and forth - I'd hit record and then run into the vocal room, so when I edited everything later, I'd have to take my footsteps out of the track," laughs Colombino, who recorded the CD in about a week and a half in the studio he built in the Colombinos' new home. The home studio not only saves money on production costs, "It's a lot easier because I can be home with the baby sometimes."
Colombino is also an actor - he recently worked on two independent movies with Paul Leyden (ex-Simon, ATWT) - but for now, he's busy with his first passion. "I miss acting, but you have to make a choice," he says. "I really need to concentrate on this for the future, for me and my wife and the baby."
That's the "now" he's been focusing on with his songwriting, although it doesn't necessarily come easily. "It's tough because it's kind of forced, like, 'Well, I have to write about Julia because I love her so much!' " he states. "I did start something about a month after she was born and I went back to it [recently]. It was so hard because I got so emotional. If you love your music, it's pretty overwhelming at times." Star Talk: "Which of your co-stars is the biggest flirt?" (CBS Soaps In Depth - February 7, 2006) Terri Colombino: "Mark Collier (Mike). He just flirts with everyone, and I don't even think he knows that he's doing it. He's very touchy - he gives hugs, puts his hand on your back, you know?"
Daddy's Little Girl (CBS Soaps In Depth - January 24, 2006) Terri Colombino (Katie) is the first person to admit that she gets plenty of help from her husband, Arthur, in raising 18-month-old daughter Julia. "Oh yeah, he's great," she says. "I'll ask him to do something real quick , and he goes, 'I don't think other dads do this, you know.' He jokes about it, but he does so much that he can joke about it." The first-time mom knows from personal experience how crucial a dad's role can be. "It's so good for Julia," Colombino explains. ""Because I had that, and I know how important it is for a little girl to feel her dad's love. I just think it's important for girls to feel that they don't need to feel it when they're older from some superficial love from guys just because their dad wasn't around."
Star Talk: "What's the most unusual thing you've ever received from a fan?" (CBS Soaps In Depth - January 10, 2006) Terri Colombino: "I got a creative thing from a group of my fans. They sent me a bamboo plant for my dressing room because they know that we don't have any windows - and bamboo can still grow inside. So that was pretty creative. And it's still alive!"
applause applause (Soap Opera Weekly - January 3, 2006) Terri Colombino (Katie, ATWT) Outstanding performer for the week of December 5
As Katie faced down the obsessively possessive BJ on his turf, ATWT Terri Colombino demonstrated an actress does not need two characters to play a dual role.
Katie arrived on Firewall Island with trepidation. "I feel a little hijacked," she confessed, fidgeting on tiptoes. The concern in her eyes grew deeper when BJ poured champagne and she realized he had orchestrated a "romantic" getaway. She covered with a smile, which he lapped up. That gave her an idea.
As Katie realized she could play BJ, Colombino turned on the charm. With twinkling eyes and a 10,000-watt smile, Katie leaned close, clasped his hand and purred calmly, bewitching him.
Katie spoke softly, sometimes with a sing-song lilt, never missing a chance to lean into him and flash her perky... smile. He played into her hands by blustering about her being a loner, but Katie never lost sight of the threat he posed. When she noted, "You remember every word I said?" disbelief and disdain washed across Colombino's face- as well as fear. After he spilled champagne on her and suggested she change in his cabana, Katie pursed her lips and hissed, "Bet everything's just my size." After she saw his collection of string bikinis and sarongs, her eyes flitted nervously and her shoulders heaved as she breathed heavily. When he recounted tiny details of her dating history, Colombino wrapped her arms around herself and shivered.
But the old Katie fire never flickered; she eavesdropped on his call and shamed him: "I thought you trusted me," she pouted while trying to look casual with one hand on her cocked hip. She sought to sweet-talk him out of revenge with soothing tones and getting close enough to kiss. When he nuzzled her forehead, Colombino looked ready to throw up.
Yet she still had the gall to defy him, so he challenged her to prove her devotion. Not with words: "Actions are much more eloquent." So she kissed him.
Similarly, Colombino's bravura mix of vulnerability, and manipulation was eloquent. She displayed two distinct personalities within the one and only Katie.
Terri Colombino's Favorite Storylines (soapoperadigest.com - January 2006) Terri Colombino's Favorite Storylines
AS THE WORLD TURNS' Katie has been naughty and nice ever since coming to Oakdale in 1998. Here, her portrayer Terri Colombino looks back on her top five storylines.
1. "I loved Simon and Katie falling in love, once she stopped scheming and pretending she was pregnant and all of that. [The show] didn't plan on their romance; it just happened out of blue, and I like that."
2. "Mark (Collier, Mike) and I were just talking about Mike and Katie in Australia and being trapped in the coffin. That was fun! Discovering that relationship was cool, too. I love stories where relationships are building. Once you're together, it's not there anymore. Plus, it was great for me to play that loss and anger of losing Simon."
3. "I loved the liver storyline with Margo. I wish it had been a little longer and more in-depth, because I appreciated the social issue of that story, which I don't get to do a lot with my character. And I love working with Ellen (Dolan, Margo). I love that Katie has her as a family member to bounce things off of, since Katie doesn't really have a best girlfriend."
4. "The Endicott Awards, when Katie got busted, was a highlight. It was so embarrassing and humiliating, and that stuff is always fun to play. I miss playing Katie as a vixen. Brian Gaskill (BJ/Byron) was just saying, 'I don't feel as bad playing this creepy character because, supposedly, you weren't the ingenue they're trying to portray you as now. You were bad for a while, too.' It reminded me of who Katie was, and it's changed how I'm playing this story now. She would know how to play BJ; she's not going to play a weakling. Katie has it in her. It doesn't just go away."
5. "When I was on the island with Trent (Dawson, Henry), finding comedy... through Henry [for Katie] - and through Trent for me. Sometimes we have to do the wackiest stuff, and you think the audience is going to go: What the...? But they loved it, because we loved doing it. Cooley was there, I was skinny-dipping, having my clothes stolen. That was fun."
